Hi, On my 3rd fuel tank, the first resulted in the fuel cap lock fail but completed the refill successfuly, the last two however the pump failed to cut out when full, queue the petrol spewing out allover the side... so I rush buy a bottle of water to wash it off and wipe dry...
Am I doing g something wrong? Is there a knack to it? Something in the pipe preventing the pump from cutting out?
Its a MY2010 SC
Thanks S

Just fill it slowly and don't brim the tank.

I'm not doing anything unusual, just put the pump all the way in and wait for the cut off that never comes. The last time I even eased the pressure just in case but it wasnt possible to react in time.
I read somewhere on my searches that a tell tale for the fuel breather tube being damaged is the lack of a hiss when opening the fuel cap. Mine does not hiss, but every other car I have ever filled up has. Does this ring true with cut off not working?
Thanks S

No idea on that, but I go off the tank capacity minus fuel gauge readout and at around a litre to go just slow right down.

S Cant be. The cut out is entirely in the pump. Are you getting the nozzle well into the tank? If you are not doing so and are fiulling at full blast then you will get some overfill between the pump sensing its full and cutting off the flow.

What I had to do in the s2000 is slow the pump until it stops cutting out every 2 secs, at this particularly sensitive BP station. But anything is worth a try to help trigger the cut off with the elise.

Its not a late cut off, the only cutoff is when I release the pressure after noticing the spill, which on one occasion would have been spilling for a few seconds of looking at the meter then feeling my hand is wet with petrol. Unlike most other cars, the fuel filler needs to go in more vertically IYSWIM. You've kinda got to lift it further in than you think. If it helps, imagine that the filler opening is horizontally rather than vertically mounted.

It shouldn't be possible as long as you've got the filler a decent way into the neck - the pump should cut out as soon as the fuel reaches the end of the nozzle.

Exactly, I can understand the problem of unwanted cut off when filling up too fast... you are inputting more that it can swallow so some comes back up and triggers the cut off, frequently in the case of my s2000. The only way I can see the cutoff not happening in the Elise is if I got the thing at such an angle that the fuel comes back up the pipe but clinging to the side thus avoiding to block the nozzle and trigger the cutoff. I will try what the above gentleman suggested with altering the angle of attack, can't see what else it could be. Cheers

Hi, For future reference in case someone else has the same problem as I did. Most importantly, you are not crazy or an incompetent fuel pump handler! My fuel filler neck was found to be faulty. There is a flap somewhere in there that got stuck and apparently this would prevent the pump cut off from working. So I am getting mine replaced under warranty. Thanks S
