After a couple of weeks with my lovely 996 C4S, I'd just like others' opinions on a few niggles.

1. CDC-4 CD changer: when I load the magazine, sometimes it doesn't detect the magazine at all, and the best I have achieved is 5 out of 6 CDs recognised. Should I get a new magazine? Is there a problem with the CD changer? Or is this a common problem?

2. Wipe interval control - seems to be about 15 seconds and the dial seems to have no effect. Is there a relay or something that needs changing in the fuse box?

3. The seat belts don't retract very quickly and need a bit of help - is this a common trait?

4. The drivers seat is fastened securely but there is a bit of play rocking back and forth - is this just another common trait, i.e. play within the electric adjustment mechanisms?

Apart from these tiny niggles, love it to bits!

Welcome to 996 ownership - had my C2 5 years, and still love it.

1) What's a CD?

2) If it's basically working, but not able to control the interval, I'd suggest the variable resistor behind the knob has gone faulty or one of its leads come off/broken.

3) Mine doesn't do that - haven't heard it being a common problem.

4) Mine a totally stable, but not electric, so can't help with a comparison there..

1. Now and again my CDR-23 does seem to get itself into a knot and needs switching off and on again. Always seems to sort it out. Rarely bother with the music, just enjoy PSE!

2. My intermittent dial works as you'd expect, sounds like you need to investigate.

3. Seat belt tensions are good on front seats, a bit lazy on rears.

4. No play in the seat, nice and solid.

Oh, and this is 2003 996 C4S I'm talking about here, so sounds like a direct comparison. It's a great car, you'll grow to love it, all the more if you sort the niggles. Enjoy!

All I can help with and maybe not that much is (1). My 03 Turbo sometimes has a problem recognizing CDs in the 6 CD changer in the front trunk. What I found fixes this is to unplug the thing then plug it back in.

I have to admit I seldom listen to the CDs: The CD player goes unused for months at a stretch; and I can't even remember which CDs I have in the changer, in the CD tray in the dash, and the storage slots in the dash.

Oh, for (3) the take up rollers are dirty or the grease has become dry with age. Not sure what the solution is. While I have experienced this with another car -- years ago -- I lived with the symptom until I got rid of the car. You might be able to remove the belt rollers, clean/regrease and reinstall them. Get a second opinion though and ideally somone who's actually addressed this problem rather than ignore it.

For (4) a seat frame might be cracked. You'll have to raise the seat and with a bright light look for this. Or take the seat out and check for any cracks. There are areas you will be able to inspect with the seat out that you can't see with it in the car.

If you find a crack a good automotive welding shop should be to fix this for you.

If a bracket/brace has loose rivets, screws you should be able to fix these.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Mine has none of these niggles but take it to a good indie and I'm sure they will be able to sort it for you.
