Just a quick question, I'm fairly sure I know the answer, but thought I would check anyway.
I came across a crawler lane for the first time yesterday, and was wondering if the speed limit is still 60mph (it was a NSL single carriageway road, A35 if anyone is interested), or does it go up to 70mph as its now two lanes?
I think it stays 60mph as there wasn't a sign that says 'dual carriageway', and no central barrier. Is this right?

Yes, it remains a 60mph for cars as its not a 'dual' carriageway it's still single as it has no physical feature separating the two.
(it doesnt have to be a barrier, grass is enough)

Its not a duel carriageway, just a road with more than 2 lanes.
A duel carriageway, is when both directions of traffic is split up by either grass verge or barrier. And can be one or more lanes in each direction

The favourite haunt of our local scamera partnership, Scottish Office build an "overtaking lane" then they plonk a van on it for weeks on end to stop it being used for overtaking - brilliant!, they're obviously not in partnership with the road designers!?

Why would it stop you from overtaking if you do not exceed the speed limit to do so?

I think it's because the scamera van is parking in the crawler lane forcing slow traffic out into the overtaking lane forcing faster traffic to slow down. Is that stretch of road not a causeway, making it illegal for the scamera van to stop where it is?

Reminds me of the A1079 that goes from York to Hull. Some nice sections with crawler lanes to enable you to get past slower moving vehcles but with speed cameras on them. So consequently hardly anyone gets past as they're all too busy worrying about the speed camera.

Therefore no one is going to be doing a speed above 60mph resulting in no overtaking. I'm sure that when we overtake in a 60mph, we probably do a speed higher than 10% + 2mph.

LGVs on the crawler lane will be going slow anyway to allow faster vehicles to pass with ease, within the speed limit.

There are lots of stupid 50mph signs, which there is a remote possibility that they might serve a purpose for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening when the traffic is heavy, you know just when it can't hit 50mph and the rest of the time when it's empty in the middle of nowhere so you have to crawl along wasting time and life for no good reason. Mind you once you get off it heading for South Cave it is a good fun road, you just have to watch out for the old bloke on a Penny Farthing  The stupidest road is the A1 through Bedfordshire from the Black Cat roundabout to Biggleswade were the A1 goes from 70 to 50 to 60 to 50 to 60 to 70

Except it's not a crawler lane, it's an "overtaking lane" specifically designed as such, 2 lanes one direction seperated from the 3rd by a double white, to answer the "within the limit" point, people see the van sitting there and rather than creep past speedo watching in case they stray over and become the "fish in that particular barrel" just don't bother! The reason it was put in there was because there are so few overtaking opportunities near by and after, nice one NESCAMP, take a bow, a cynic could indeed think they were there for another reason other than road safety?

Poster said: "on it", not "by it", so I too would interpret that as being parked in the lane not on the verge. Streaky
