Right guys im toatally at the end of my wits with my RX8 last saturday night i took it out for a good couple of hours drive and parked it up outside my house shut it down poperly held it at 5000 RPM 10-12secs to push out fuel oil as ive always done. Went to start it on Tuesday morning absolutely nothing !! plenty of power in battery so wasnt battery rang out green flag and mechanic said it was flooded so pulled out Fuel Pump relay from fuse panel tried turning it over a few times then nothing !! in the end of trying said would need to be towed to a garage as access to spark plugs was difficult and had to be put on lift or ramp from below ! So the car was towed to garage on Tuesday to be de flooded Ive had a call from garage on Tuesday evening saying spark plugs are shot so have to order new plugs at 26 quid each x 4 ?? and also an oil and oil filter change its now Friday and ive heard nothing !!! can anyone give me some advice or help am i having my eyes pulled out here ???? is it really a hard fix to deflood an RX8 is there anyone out there who actually is an expert on these cars ?? is there any specialists in the north east ??

Only people I know of who have experience of re-building and doing stuff to those engines in the North East is JM-Imports:

http://www.jm-imports.co.uk/

Mainly importers of cars but do alot of re-building/mechanical work, might be able to help.

Hi mate

I'm far from an expert but I owned an RX8 a couple of years ago and sadly managed to flood it too. I did exactly as you did (removing fuse etc) and managed to get mine running again.

However it did take about 10mins of trying before it fired up again. After a few mins it started to make progress with each attempt at starting, then coughed its guts up all over the driveway with a cloud of dirty black smoke!

Regarding a specialist, sadly I didn't have mine long enough to need one.

As you say, the car was flooded due to turning the engine off when not up to temperature. This is a pain to sort, but generally removing the fuel pump fuse and changing the spark plugs (not a requirement here though) and then persevering.

£26 per spark plug is normal for these cars, as they don't use conventional spark plugs.

Word of warning, when the car does get going again, fuel will be blasted into the catalytic converter and this can damage it. Basically, don't do it again!

Yes you can - mine started in about a minute of tow starting as opposed to the 2 days of mucking about previously. If you have another car handy or a mate who would tow you I wouldn't hesitate.

BTW, how is the ignition system - when were the coils/leads/plugs last changed?

Just a note on de-flooding it: I've de-flooded my Dad's RX8 and it took about 45mins... It was badly flooded though. If your going to be turning it over for any length of time, obviously best to keep the battery connected to another car and avoid turning it over for extended periods of time or you may kill the starter motor (I think?).

This involved a lot of white smoke from the exhausts and a long time of the engine 'nearly' catching.

The spark plug cost sounds about right.

That may not be much help, but my point is that if you think your not de-flooding it, maybe your just not trying hard enough. biggrin
