On Sunday I finally experienced what the F40 is about, and better still, with ex racing driver John Pogson behind the wheel. What an awesome combination. That car is mentally quick, I could feel everything it was doing from the passenger seat. On a few tight twisties my neck hurt from the lateral G's. And that noise too was so dramatic, all the pops and bags from the exhaust, then the hiss from the turbos, and the howling V8! Also when I followed it later driving the 355 so my passenger could take some footage, we were treated to some spectacular flames! The event was organised by supercardriver to raise money for the Bluebell Wood childrens hospice, and in return for a donation you were taken out for a run in an F40 on some cracking roads in the Yorkshire dales. There were lots of other cars to ride in, but for most people it was all about the F40, and I know why. I've driven some fantastic cars recently (Aventador, 458, MP4-12C), but nothing compares to the F40, and it was such a privaledge to finally ride in my ultimate dream car!!! Here is some of the footage that some people took on the day, one of which is me returning with the biggest grin from ear to ear! It was John Pogsons ex race car which is now returned to road spec and unbelievably a concourse car! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yq9Wa78J4c&fea...One day, I WILL own one of these things! I offered several limbs and my wife to John on the day, but sadly we couldn't agree on a deal!

Here's another video from the day I took as the F40 and some of the other cars on offer came by. Check out the flames on the overrun! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=henKxnViCQc&fea...Anyone who can afford an F40 and buys something else must be mad!!!

I was lucky enough to drive an F40 many many years ago. As you said on the video 'fooking hell'!!!!
The most epic car i have ever driven, & that includes the 288GTO i drove back from Maranello way back in 1985.
The daddy of all supercars & a car that has never been surpassed for the wow factor. Raw, brutal, scary.
Simply unrivalled.
The ultimate supercar & surely the car that should be at the top of everyones 'want' list.
F40 - THE BEST.

I still smile about the experience even after all these years - it was brutally fast & i was able to spin the rear wheels in 3rd gear!!
Truly awesome car to drive & if i am ever lucky enough to be in the position to own just one single car for the rest of my life it would be an F40.
Every supercar should be built like the F40 - raw & with passion.
They dont, sadly, make them like the F40 anymore which is a great pity.

I wonder if anyone will ever make anything like it again? Or if its even possible given todays strict legislations?

If you think about the F40 logically it is all wrong isnt it?
Not the prettiest car ever built, panel bit not the best, no equipment whatsover - no stereo, no carpets, no power steering, no electric windows, no airbags, no sat nav, no electrics to go wrong (a good thing though on an Italian car!) very thin paint, welds visible in the cockpit.....
Yet it is just something special.
Very very fast, superb handling (although in the wet a bit of a handful), the turbo's, the flames on the over-run, the noise, the accelaration...
Its just insane & i love the F40 more than any other car i have driven & i would sell my other half to get an F40 into the garage even for a day!!!
I doubt that any manufacturer would have the balls to build such a simple supercar these days.
Although wouldnt it be good if someone did just that? A simple, brutal sportscar.

I remember watching John Pogson piloting his F40 in the Maranello Challenge back in the 90s. I may even have a photo or two kicking about somewhere.
I've decided (though they don't know it yet) that when the sad day comes to sell my parents' house the some of the funds will be spent on an F40. Even if I only keep it a few months it's the only car in the world I'd spunk a chunk of the family legacy on. What a thing.
