Hi all,

As the title says really... Can I use my iPhone 4S as some sort of personal wifi hotspot for my iPad 2?

I have a really ancient O2 Unlimited Data contract on my phone which is great as I can chew through 1-2Gb a month and not give it a thought, but I'm finding I'm using my iPad out of the house a little more for 'reading the paper' etc and finding free public wifi isn't always easy.

I have learnt my lesson and plan on buying a 3G iPad next, but until then, can I tether it to my phone for brief periods here and there?

Is there an app or something that does this?

Many thanks smile

You can pay O2 to get a 'tethering' contract, but that would negate the one that you have I imagine. Or you can jailbreak it.

Its under settings - hotspot. You might need to pay extra per month depending on your contract and it uses a lot of battery but apart from that it works well.

If you go into your general settings on your iPhone you should see "personal hotspot"

Turn this on & on your iPad's wifi search look for your iPhone, input the password & away you go thumbup

Be careful though, some service providers charge extra for it & it can get expensive.

It's the reason I moved from O2 to 3 as 3 don't charge you for it. We use my "all you can eat data" mobile contract for all our wifi needs.

As said before, jailbreak the phone and install MYWI and you'll get round the charges from O2

Erm... Am I being stupid?

I've been into General settings and there isn't anything there about Hotspots!

I'm on O2, don't have a tethering contract, and don't have that hotspot option either. I suspect that they will 'unlock' that option for you if you renegotiate a new contract with it included. Or you could JB it smile

I also have latest firmware.

You need a tethering contract. They will then unlock the option.

If you don't have it there are three options: 1) Get a tethering contract. 2) Jailbreak. 3) Buy a MiFi.

I have the latest software.

I suspect Tonsko is right and this option needs unlocking by O2.

I'm not really fancying a jailbreak, I'm not that technical.

Looks like my options are:

1)Ask O2 for a tethering contract which will result in them ripping up my old £25 a month unlimited data tariff (which I can cancel at any time) and no doubt signing me up to a new contract and bending me over for the 2/3gb a month I will probably use between iPhone and iPad.

2)buy an iPad 3G with the £10 a month data contract.

3)keep my iPhone and iPad the same and buy one of those £10 a month T Mobile or Three portable wifi hotspot devices which may be handy.

Hmmm.

yes On mine I can go to Settings => General => Network => Set Up Hotspot but if I select it, I get told to contact Orange UK to enable it.

My iPad shares my Android connection without any of this messing around. Although technically against the terms of my giff gaff terms it's not been a problem in the year or so I've done it.

I've never head of GiffGaff but I just looked on their website and the pay monthly tariffs are a steal!

Are they for real? Any catches?
