Looking at chopping in my Outback in the near future, as much as I love it, and can't make up my mind between the X5, RX, Cayenne and Touareg.

In fact, the Outback's tempted to stick with the old Japs and go for an RX. Looking at spending around £12k-£15kish. X5s kind of bore me now and all the toys in the RX seem to be floating my boat. Though that's probably me just getting older. boxedin

What would you go for?

Out of that lot... none. A new Outback.

I'm having a similar conundrum. I've a MY05 Legacy 3-litre which I'm having to part with in the 2nd quarter of next year. I'll be taking-on a MY08 Mercedes ML which is in mint condition but I have severe misgivings. The Legacy is worth very little. The Merc will be worth ~£20K. I keep thinking I could chop it in for a new-shape Outback (even though they look terrible - they are incredible cars).

Range Rover is like driving a big wobbly boat.
Avoid… unless you like wobbly boats.

Take a look at a Discovery 3. It’s a bloody nice big 4x4 and you should get one on your budget.
If you want more of a car feel than a 4x4 feel then have a look at the Audi Q5 or Q7.

wouldnt have an X5 or RX.

Cayenne best on road by a country mile and actually (a bit tyre dependant) astonishing off road. looks arent to everyones taste and mpg isnt great

FFRR fabulous in every way aside from a bit wallowy.

Touareg a good car but wouldnt put in same bracket as FFRR and Cayenne

Discovery 3 had kind of slipped off the radar. No idea why.

Problem is the Outback is bloody good. Just getting a bit long in the tooth. But it's also now worth next to bugger all.

The RX will keep going when all those are in the scrappies and will be the cheapest to run, no one will think you are a tosser and it's a bit quick if you go for the 400h.

I had the 2.5 tdi toureg and rx400 at the same time so I would always be inclined to go for the Lexus first then toureg after then x5 then cayenne.

I actually like the looks of the Cayenne. It's just the running costs that give me the willies.

Disco 3 all day long if you're being sensible.

Or an L322 TD V8 if you're being less sensible and can stretch closer to £20k

Interesting you had both. Was the RX far and away better than the VW?

I would have the Cayenne - i even quite like the looks.

Unless of course we're talking about a V10-engined Touareg...?

I've driven all but the RX. So out of them four I'd take the Cayenne as it's the best to drive on road, although the looks aren't to everyones taste.

Couple of other options worth considering:
Volvo XC90
Audi Allroad
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Mercedes ML

A bit of a left field option, but subaru tribecas are pretty good value, 10-15 k will get you a 2007/8 probably less than 40k on clock, with lots of toys.

I test drove nee of these when they first came out and they have the most comfortable seats I have ever found in a car.

Also how about nissan murano - likewise pretty comfy (actually a great ride)

No not far, had twice the mpg in town and it was a really nice place to be in and zero reliability issues . You wouldn't go wrong with either tbh

Just been out in an RX 400.

Think I preferred my Outback.

Just been through the same, Cayenne S, Touareg V10 which ended up adding RR Vogue and possibilities of Allroad.

My conclusion, keep my ML55 because I wasn't gaining in any area other than a slightly newer car.

I went for an ML500, stupidly good value for money because of the big lump and reasonably good on fuel. We averaged about 21mpg over 8k miles, which was only 5 less than I averaged in a diesel over the same mileage, and when you take into account the cheaper price of fuel it's almost the same. (good old man maths to justify a V8)

I also managed to sell it on for £1k more than I paid for it 12 months previously!

None of those and go for a Mazda CX-7! Does everything the others do for less money, more equipment and a with very good performance and handling!

Maybe consider the 5.0 V8 FX50? Look very muscular in the flesh, and quite rare.

Has the ATTESSA AWD system, so RWD most of the time, until you give it some beans.
