I have just had my 997 C2S gen 2 come out from its first service at 17.5k miles after it being 2 years old. Everything checked out well except the OPC recommended that I get the underside of the car waxed to help protect against erosion for £89. They said they recommend this should be done every 2 years. It sounded very much like a sales pitch to me so I declined at the time.

Is this a common "recommendation" to drive up the service margin or is it genuinely required?

Not sure about Porsche's but when i had a brand new Impreza i took it for the first service and it was free apart from the "Sir, you need to get it wax'd underneath the Warranty will be void". But saying that it only needed doing once.

What a load of crap. In my experience waxoyle does more to attract the dirt than repel it. Your car should be galvanised anyway. And unless they planned to thoroughly clean the car underneath prior to applying the wax, they would just be layering it on top of dirt and salt.

In Scandinavia this treatment is common if not a must. They work very well and the products used are quite advanced. Having said that these treatments cost at least 350gbp or so and take quite a few hours so I doubt that anything at the price point you mention is worth doing.....imho.

I saw a 1978 Volvo which had been treated every 2 years in one of these centres in Denmark a couple of years ago and the car had covered 265k miles and had been used all year round and it was almost like new underneath. But as I say it does depend on the material used and the skill/thoroughness of the operator.

Depending on how you use your car it may be worth doing but I would question that price and what you actually get for thatsmile

Because an "as Porsche made it" car has been protected so well, I can't imagine that a wax protection would be of great benefit ----

I am told that most modern Porsches that do rust have been repaired, and not well enough.

As for the old cars, I should say that a good clean and re-wax underseal is very worthwhile, on a timely basis.

Post '76 cars were double galvanized, but it didn't stop them rusting !

Cars from 1972 had gavanized floor pans ..

An interesting topic because it is much easier to retain the original metal than to have to try to replace the rot !!

Your car has gone if for its first service and they are advising this!

Either;

A - Porsche have no confidence in their product;
B - This is a new 'extra' to help offset declining revenue.

Which is it?
