Is there a UK equivalent of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act 1975, that exists in the states?

I am trying to find out if using a non-manufacturer spec replacement oil filter will void the warranty on an engine in the UK.

I can't believe it is possible for a manufacturer to lock customers in to their warranty period so easily in Europe.

Do you really mean non manufacturer spec, or manufacturer spec, just not supplied by a franchised dealer?

We were told a long time ago that providing we can prove maintenance to or above manufacturer recommendations, warranties have to be honoured. That was by the a local franchised dealer. Something to do with unfair contract terms or something if they locked you to using their dealers.

EU competition law applies here, and there is a (soon to be repealed) block exemption in respect of some aspects of the car industry.

See http://ec.europa.eu/competition/sectors/motor_vehi...

The text of the Regs is there, but see also part III of the Commission Guidelines at http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?...

I am looking at a new product, and it is fully compliant (and often exceeds) with all regulations stipulated by the manufacturers, but at the moment I don't know if I can sell it without being at risk from voiding my customers warranty.
