Hi Guys,

Just to make clear, I am not in a position to buy anyone of these yet, i am still just a 24 yr old. smile

But I have always wondered when people post here stating a dilemma on which car should they buy with their 200k they always talk about a murci or 599 etc.

The question I have is why does one not consider exotics like the Gumpert or Spyker which (i feel) is a car perfect for the weekend. The Gumpert is the hardcore car and the Spyker is a stunning cruiser.

Please I would really be interested in knowing the members on this forum think.

Personally I would have the Gumpert for 200k or a Spyker for 110k and have a 911 or a G55 as a DD.

I think it would be interesting to know how people think when they buy cars of such value.

Thanks.

For me, the biggest issue with cars like the Gumpert, and to a lesser extent a Spyker, is that they're still a relative unknown.

Yes they're probably fantastically built, but the R&D would have been a fraction of what Ferrari have spent, so reliability 'could' be an issue, and re-sale would also be a complete pain as there aren't many people happy to put £200k into a non main-stream car.

Just look at Lotus for example - the Evora has recieved rave reviews in the press, but how many people would go and buy one instead of a Cayman or 911 - hardly any.

IMO the only small car maker to have made it into the big league in recent years has been Pagani. A couple of manufacturers are almost there - Koenigsegg/Spyker, but I would say most people who have to choose either/or, would go for the safer option.

Thanks for your reply.

Isn't reliability an issue with Ferrari's and Lamborghini's too; Or was it just the older models like the 355 and the Diablos? Are the new launches of Ferrari 458 and the 458 as reliable as Audis and Bmws?

Arent small manufacturers like Gumpert and Ascari source most of their parts and engine from the likes or Audi and Mercedes?

Thanks

Also you have to bear in mind it is easy to spend imaginary fantasy money but when it is your own hard earned you think about things like reliability, depreciation and how easy it will be to sell. I love the Koenigsegg (those doors - wow) but look how long they are for sale in the classifieds for. Literally years. If you want a car and think in a year or 2 you may want a different one then these are not things that have a very liquid market. It doesn't matter if it will be a car for life but most supercar owners chop and change them frequently.

If you were to spend this much money on a car I might just as well look good. That Gumpert (what a name btw) looks just unbelievably awful, don't care how amazing it is to drive (very, probably).

It will be interesting to see how Lotus fair with the new V8 Espirit...

I was at Morgan factory tour the other month, and even tho I think it looks cross-eyed and ugly, the Aero8 sells quite a few cars a year. Both small manufacturers with small R&D budgets, and obviously both not hypercars by the standards of those mentioned above, but they have their fans.

Indeed, my view is that this is the crux of the matter. All these generally less well known brands are clearly absolutely impossible to shift quickly unless you're prepared to lose tens of thousands - which you wouldn't have lost if you'd gone more "mainstream".

Quite simple really:

No idea about reliability
No idea about running costs
No idea about re-sale values

It's therefore a brave man who buys a 'new' brand.

Those who bought early Zondas, especially used have done very well, those who bought 'eggs or Gumperts or a dozen other crazy mainly UK small specialists not so.

Because the Spyker is in simple terms 'an absolute munter'?

Horrible, horrible looking car.

If a catfish could drive, that would be its car of choice because it looks like one.

The minute I saw the word Spyker I was going to say to the OP go and look at one for your answer, sorry but it just a total miss match of old morgan / MG interior with a modern kit car body, lovely engine and sounds the nuts for sure.
Gumpert as has been said to much of an unknown for that money.
I had kind of penciled in the cheap egg on here at the moment as my "cheap" one day car what with the enzo and zonda being double money, again go and look at it, the dashboard is about 4 foot long !!
Others to add to your question would be the saleen and the Hennessy, the Hennessy is just awesome and build quality very good but would I buy one if I only had one lot of 300k or so to spend I dont know.
Also I think a lot of people tend to go for new if they can, having looked recently at an egg zonda and f40 and 50 without some serious work I dont think I would have any of those that I looked at over say a 599 gto, then you have to ask yourself the question is a gto really 200k better than a std car to look at and drive ? ...... its difficult :-)

That is NOT helping.

its not got the club sport package and its a 170K 911. Though look at it. I bet it loves being "riden hard and put away wet". We could have so much fun together. No...its a 170K 911 the same price as a decent murci roadster.

How can anyone say that that interior is not amazing? I can see the Catfish bit though?
Didn't stop me from wanting and then buying one. Oh look another 911, another 430? Wow look a Gumbert, Enzo, Zonda, MC12 or Facel Vega? It's wow because how often do you see one. Go those crazy petrolheads that don't follow the rest of the sheep!!!!

I disagree with this. The gumpert looks purposeful. Where as a 430, gallardo, mp4 12c doesn't. They look the dogs danglies and at 200k it could be a proper bargain but its all about the residuals. Could I flog it? Will it fleece me left right and center at every service. If these things didn't come into the equation I would have it in a heartbeat.

I bet it drives a whole better than any mainstream car. I say drives what I mean is excite.

Then again I am drawn to spending stupid cash on a 911 so my logic is probably flawed.
