So, I'm finding myself falling for these. It's a totally stupid thing for me to buy, but I've just seen this one for sale and it just looks a tad under priced. Any reason why?! Just it seems to be 749 money...

Because they're the 'ugly cousin' of Ducatis. No-one liked them, because of the design and styling, and so they're not considered a 'classic' Ducati compared to the 916 before it, and the later models.

However - like you, I always did like them myself!

Looking at the one in the ad - seems fine - it's a bargain because of the reasons above, nothing else.

Definitely the 'thinking man's choice' - kinda like modern Skoda cars?

I'd get it bought if I was you! biggrin

I want that one. I have a craving for 999s and that bargain had caught my eye.

I drive a Skoda too.

biggrin Ok - erm, modern French hot hatches? Or something?

I dunno!

Seriously though - looks like a nice bike. Unbelievably cheap innit? So much for your money, right there.

True...but it's been for sale for a fair while if it's such a bargain.

Well instead of speculating and dragging it out on here, where you'll get nothing but opinion, conjecture and Skoda comparisons - why not get over and have a look over it, to see for yourself? Then you'll know.

Might have been for sale for a while because:

1. The ad doesn't show it too well - crappy pictures

2. No-one really liked 999's when they first came out as I said - and especially now we have such a big selection of the more desirable Ducatis to choose from, and the new Panigale out, it's gonna be harder than ever to sell a 999

3. We are in a horrible recession where not too many people are dropping £000's on bikes and toys - and the ones who do have the money, want desirable models, and probably not 999's

4. We've had the wettest summer on record - the weather affects bike buying like nobody's business. As the market for a 999 is as a toy, and it's no good as a despatch bike or commuter, most summer / recreational bikers have either bought earlier in the year, or have given up on the idea because of all the rain

Which, if I've got this correct - means there's a lovely, cheap 999 for sale right now with YOUR NAME written on it, yeah?

Post pics up when you get it home, there's a good lad biggrin

I'm 32 years old, so the 748, 916, 996 were the absolute bedroom wall poster bikes when I was a teenager... Then a 996 appears in The Matrix Reloaded in 2003 and everyone is still getting excited over them.

BUT... I'm going to be unpopular here and say I think finally the 748/916 is starting to really date. It suddenly looks very 90's...

For me, the 749 and 999 have got better looking as a few years have gone past and still look really modern, almost futuristic/exotic.

Stand a 916 next to a 999 and it's the 999 for me every time. It looks a lot fresher, a lot more modern and just generally a lot more bike.

I too have been eyeing up the bargains smile

It's interesting - my old man's got a 1,800 mile 996 in the garage and it is fking stunning...but so is the 999 but in a different way.

I love them both and will be buying the 996 when he looks to sell it but the 999 is still sitting there in the back of my mind...not that I'd be able to afford the insurance just yet - sling it in the garage for 9 months smile

Last year I got Spyder Club's red 749 delivered to me at a park near Luton airport, and a (small) crowd gathered to look at it, and a few people commented that it was a beautiful bike! I was definitely shocked considering that my opinion of that model for a long time had been unfavorable, aesthetically at least.

I know what you mean about the 749/999 looking "futuristic", as it looks more "modern" in a way than even the 1X98s. The 1098/1198 are certainly beautiful but are sortof bland? in a way, though I'd absolutely love one of course. The 1199 just looks ugly apart from the front and rear lights - some of the sculpting on the side is truly horrendous, and the 916's front end at least is a bit dated tho not unpleasant.

I did find the riding posn of the 749 to be absolutely ridiculous the first few miles though at the time I was riding a Multistrada everyday. But even in comparison with an RSV4, or S1000RR or any other modern 1000 except the ZX10R, the 749 felt cramped. Not in the seat-peg ratio though but the reach to the bars and how close together the bars are, but I suppose thats very individual

Dud you not buy a gsxr 750 only to discover you couldn't insure it? Or is this purely a future investment?

I have never understood why the 749/999 is often tagged as the least popular design as I think they are stunning. Perhaps it’s because the 916/996/998 shape was so iconic and ahead of its time? I suppose that was a tough act to follow!

I had a lovely little 749S and often miss it. The only reservation I would have on the example in the original post is that the later black swingarm bikes are significantly better. Having said that it does look clean in those photos.

Tomorrow I pick up my new 996 and then I will have had the pleasure of owning all three generations and I cannot help but think Ducati sort of released them in the wrong order; the 999 looks more modern (futuristic?) than the 1098 and should have followed it!

But I think my 996 is going to be my fave....

Good to see you back Mark.

I tested the 749 & 999 back to back when they came out and much preferred the 7's. The difference in handling was like night and day

Cheers Amigo!

Only difference between the 749 and 999 (apart from the engine..... ) is the fatter rear tyre on the 999 makes it less nimble on the twisties in my view. Apparently the 848 / 1098 was the same but I have never ridden the 848 to compare.

Hated the 999 when it came out, but it's really grown on me too. Aged very well. I also think they look way better in the flesh than in photos, whereas 1098/1198/916 are very photogenic.
