First of all I have to admit I have limited knowledge about Porsches. However, after following a Gen 2 Carrera I am beginning to see the beauty of Porches. It just looks so sexy especially from the rear. I've read the Haltech guide and find it helpful although that is focussed mainly on 996 models. Within my budget are either Gen II Carreras (I LOVE that rear light...) or earlier 997 Turbos. I would really want some kind of power and AWD would be very nice too. I am not too fussed about the transmission. I am leaning towards the Turbo but very curious about the Carerra too. For the Carrera the performance stats seems decent enough. Anyway, I have been looking at the following Porks (please forgive the AT links:P) http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...Any comments on these choices or better recommendations for my budget? I am doing low miles (circa 8000 pa) but would really need something reliable as I use it for commute and the occasional weekend drive.

go and drive them
the turbo is always a different car to the cooking NA models so its up to you to discover what you like and what you want
also 997 turbos are best with a decent warranty as they carry supercar bills and they do seem to have niggles
RSJ are well respected on PH and reputedly good people to buy from
that said, you might not get a test drive from them
best of luck with the journey

As above, go test drive both!
With your budget you could go the OPC route for peace of mind & that 2 year warranty.
The 997 turbo is a fantastic car, bloody fast but also an everyday car if you so wish to drive it that way.
Good luck on your hunt

Thanks for the kind comments I will definitely try to get myself a test drive. I am tempted to go manual but from forums I take PDKs are more popular? I would've thought > 06 997 Turbos are more reliable compared to the older ones which are prone to failed engines? I am around the midlands (Northants) area so anyone can recommened a good place to approach? OPC prices seems to be very much higher compared to the rest. I am thinking of Dove as they seem to have a lot of decent stock. Is an extended warranty a MUST for older cars? (997 turbos...)

Correct me if I am wrong but none of the 996 OR 997 turbo engines have any issues with IMS or bore scoring at all. Pretty much bulletproof?!

The 996 and 997 GEN1 turbo uses the Mezger engine which is a race derived lump and is pretty bullet proof. The 997 GEN2 has a new engine, I do not know anything about it and cannot comment on its reliability.

The preference on the 996 (by a long way) is the manual (so much so that there is quite a difference in resale value) however the PDK on the 997 is a very different beast, and I'm not sure which was the more popular - I'm not sure of the sales split between manual and PDK on the 997 - anyone know?

crazy about cars said: Yes they do, however music in a 997 Turbo is not relevant , I some times drive fifty or so miles before realising I haven't switched the Bose on
