Just interested really.
I found the 997 to be pretty loud at motorway speeds, and difficult to speak to a passenger. Also left my ears ringing after an hour or so.
Something I didn't consider was different tyres, ie switching from Cups to something more road biased.
Anyone else find theirs loud?
And yes, I know it's not what you buy one for!

I have some ear damage so I'm very sensitive to this problem. I find all 997s to be prone to road noise/tyre roar. And yes, it's very dependant on tyre compound and type. Michelins are quietest, be that PS2s or PSS. They are both about as quiet/noisy as each other. Pirellis and Bridgestones considerably louder.

Yep! Even with PS2s.
996.1 GT3. Mind you, even the colour is loud.

It's an 'it depends' answer. Put it this way, it is not perfect for taking the other half out to a quite romantic dinner!

Given that part of the GT3 recipe is to remove sound deadening this is pretty much expected isn't it? As has been said though - tyres will be a big factor in this.

Yep way OTT on noise front. Bought a new 997.2 GT3 Dec 2010 and sold 10 moths later after nearly going deaf. Not a car for regular road driving despite all the hype? All in my humble opinion. On plus side fab to drive, great to look at and that engine! Perhaps I'm just to old!

I'm not sure about all this. I done 1200 miles in. 4 days on a European road trip and loved every minute of it and always had the sport button on. It's what u buy these cars for

That'll do the job :-) Done that ages ago - still not loud enough ha ha. What's more, I'm convinced that the car is actually louder now than it was last year - must be the wear and tear on the exhaust system or something. The bypass should sort me out though. (I played bass for almost 20 years in lots of different punk/rock/ska bands up until about 5/6 years ago - my hearing isn't what it used to be... )

Don't find it loud on the motorway at all tbh, I had a 350z roadster before and that was terrible, couldnt even hear the radio. Put me off convertibles it was that loud.
I do find it very loud in tunnels, but that could be down to me hitting the sport button and keeping the revs between 6-8k rpm

At motorway speeds in 6th (and below 4,000 rpm), I think it's acceptable. Yes it's noisier than a regular Carrera - but considering how "focussed" it is in other areas - I think that's fine! Mine is running on the Bridgestones, which I know throw more noise into the cabin, but I can't justify changing to MPS when they all have 5mm of tread on them ..... Let's face it - when you're "on it" - it's purfect!

The noise level is just one of the complaints my wife has.....other major gripe is the colour. All this means is that I get to use the car alone!

My girlfriend loves the noise, instantly said "this is a bit different to the Carrera" as soon as we drove off but she loves the top end howl (particularly closing in on 8,000rpm)! Her biggest complaint is over lumpen and undulating "B" roads - taken at speed - aparently this makes her boobs hurt!

996 GT3 Exhaust note is way to quiet for the road like being in any other modern day Porsche for noise. Will be looking into some sort of noise from rear boxes or a converstion in the future.
