A neighbor of mine has done me a bit of a favor,

He refuses payment but said buy him a decent bottle of Brandy to make a change from the supermarket stuff he usually drinks.

Slight problem I know nothing at all about Brandy, in fact the only Brandy I think I've ever tried was free at the end of a curry and I'm suspecting wasn't the finest.

Just supermarket Martell, Corvousier (sp) , Remy Martin, Hennessey will do most brandy drinkers.

If you want to spend more just find a more expensive version of any of the above, or Hine.

I would have thought £50ish ideally but if something worth having is a bit more then I'd up the budget

Should be able to pick up some Hine for fifty quid I'd have thought.

If you can stretch the budget a bit (depends on how big the favour was!), Delemain pale and dry is lovely.

Last bottle I bought was c£70 from Majestic.

I'm not a brandy drinker by any stretch but I've always though Three Barrels VSOP was nice.

This ^^^^ probably the nicest, easily available brandy in the UK.

Asda (sigh, yes, really) are doing Remy Martin Coeur De Cognac for £40.55: it's fantastic and a bargain at the price.

What? The Janneau? Any bottle of Janneau is far superior to most of the other brandies available in the UK. Although that Remy just posted about would be worth a taste!

I've not tried one I don't enjoy yet. The Grand and VSOP Grand are lovely, but even the five yr old in the tall slim bottle is great and reasonably priced.

How are you defining superior?

Spot on, Hine has to be the best quality/price ratio of any Brandy available.

This stuff is superb, I've had XO's at twice the price which i've felt not as good

Highly recommended.

Tastes nicer, dummy biggrin

All a matter of personal opinion o'course -I find all Armagnacs smoother than, and with a smoky richness that is missing from, Cognacs.
My paternal grandfather introduced me to the joys of Armagnac and I still have his preferred glass for those family moments smile

The flavour of the Remy Martin VSOP makes it a favourite with me, I always find it instantly recognisable over other Brandies. Another bottle I regularly buy is their Coeur De Cognac while Hine is another firm favourite.

Going down the XO route I've tasted umpteen and keep coming back to Hennessy XO. cloud9

Thats like "recommend me a good malt" Try many - reject most, drink more of what you like !

I know what I like in brandy, calvados and malt but will not be everyones taste.
