I'm considering my first 911 with a 25-30K budget.

It's to be used as a second car for local running around and a bit of fun at weekends only. Two young kids mean I'm not fussed about mint examples as I won't be able to maintain them to the level they deserve!

Is your advice to go for a top spec 996 (C4S or similar) or a newer but less specced 05/06 997?

Also is a cab a good idea with young kids or a hard-top the more sensible option?!

Any help gratefully received!

A cabs rear seats have slightly forward facing so could be a pain. 9964S is a pretty thing but maybe for 25 u can find a good 997 2S privately which i think personally is the better car and is likely to be newer.

When we looked at cabs v coupes for toddler rear seat space, we found that the coupe has significantly more room in the back. It's already pretty marginal with a coupe, but for us the cab was a no-go. We tried toddler seats in both to confirm.

As for 996 v 997 that's entirely your call. We started looking at 996 C4S with a budget of £25K, but finally went for a 996 C2 simply because they are so much cheaper. With 997 C2 prices coming down, I think that's the way I'd go with a £25-30K budget, but make sure you try a mint sub £20K 996 first as you may decide to save yourself £10K. I didn't personally give a st about having the latest model (this was pre 991 last Autumn)

Have you ruled out turbos? With that budget, 996 turbo would definitely be top of my list.

Yes at that budget you could get a nice 996 turbo with the more reliable engine and so much much faster!!!

996 Turbo without doubt smile

Great car, great engine - in fact Ruf prefer the 996 Turbo engine to the 997 one's.....

Low 30s will get you a corker of a 996 Turbo. High 20s will get you a good one with average mileage. Plenty for sale on PH at the mo.

Having owned a Cab in the past, it's a two-seater in practice rather than an occasional 2+2 due to the aforementioned rear seatbacks being angled slightly forward of the vertical. To this day, I'm convinced the only reason they fit them is to fool people into thinking they're more practical cars than a Boxster S.

You need to get out and drive the cars in your price range. Buy the one you like most. When I did that I decided the 996 Turbo was not for me.

Agree with the views on a 996t as they're brilliant cars, if you find a decent one.

911 Virgin have just had an 06 black 997 C2 car in at £27.5k with 40k miles & it looks a nice car; Tom there is a top bloke & they're a nice set of people to deal with, especially if it's your first Porsche and you need a bit of advice.

Good Luck.

I was too nervous of early 997 and settled on 996. I guess it depends on your assessment of risk. I prefer the instant response of the NA cars.

thanks all for your contributions so far... there I was thinking I'd narrowed it down... and then the turbo gets a mention! Hadn't considered this road but will do now!

This is a question I wrestled with for much of the last 12 months...

The short answer is I've just bought a beautiful '06 997 C2S for a bit under £30 from a reputable independent. Lots of research, much thinking (even about M3s and Maseratis!), agonising about engine failures etc... Eventually the look of the 997 (versus the front of the 996) and the stonking NA engine of the C2S won me over. There's plenty of choice out there in that price bracket and once you're clear it's a 911 for you, it really boils down to 996 Turbo vs 996 C4S vs 997 C2S. All three have their cheerleaders (rightly so) so it boils down to what you want (turbo?, 4WD?, "better" looks) and lets face it you'll be happy with any of that three!

Not sure how much digging you've done on Porsches, so I'll get to the point. the 3.6/3.8 units in the Carreras have a *VERY* small chance of suffering what equates to catastrophic engine failure. Whilst every doom-sayer will run at you telling your IMS or bore liners are going to explode into what equates to an expensive fragmentation grenade at any given moment if you don't change the oil every 200yards, this is not true. I've had a 2007 C4S since May 2007. I've had no problems with it so far. However if I was in your position, with your budget, and I knew the minimalistic chances of engine failure - I'd go for a Turbo 996. Incredible speed and usability and I must say, I think they've aged very well. Interior is a bit dated, perhaps but they are bulletproof and seem to be excellent value for money.

Don't assume all Carreras are made of chocolate though. They are excellent cars and the naturally aspirated M96/M97 lumps do sense shivers down my spine.
