I was planning to put a baby seat in the GT3 but have been told that you cannot turn the airbag off, so can't. Does anyone know if you can turn the airbag off and how, and is there any reason I cannot put a baby seat in the bucket seats?

I have the Porsche airbag deactivation thingy in my 6GT3. Its hidden away under the passenger bucket seat and unless you knew it was there you would never find it. I have never used it personally and thought I would get it taken out one day... Neat little unit and quite expensive to buy and have fitted at an OPC I understand.

The Recaro Young Sport fits quite nicely in the buckets. Covers children 9 months - 12 years.

Have you any pics? A seat that fits into the 996 buckets is of significant interest for me.

Porsche's own child car seat is supposed to be the right one to use but in practice I found it pretty hopeless. It rolls from side to side even in the narrow buckets and the kids always complained about the holding piece which completely covers their stomach. Pic below:

Pic below: If I remember correctly it's been proven that type of chair is extremely dangerous for a child.

The child seat airbag de-activation bars pop up on ebay occasionally, they also sell them here: http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_baby...They're a doddle to fit although they do require slightly longer seat mounting bolts, they should come with the kit but if they don't they're available from Porsche at a price.

I have just had this device fitted. I believe, but am not 100% certain, that the car has to be programmed via obd to know the dongle is there. Give Jzm a call who fitted mine.
Op asked about babyseat- in which case cannot help with a rear facing one that fits, but, for a forward facing child seat the recaro youngsport does fit very snugly. I cannot post a photo I am afraid as car and I are in different parts of the country.

Airbag deactivation kit from the non-GT 996 will fit. Easy DIY job (New side panel for the IP, small cutout (preformed, very easy) in the centre console, two plugs and you are done. Takes less than 2hrs. You will need someone with a PIWIS (OPC or good indy) to get it coded to work though. In case you are planning on asking your OPC for a quote regarding fitment - make sure you tell them that you DON'T want the isofix bar to be fitted (as you can't with buckets ), as this is a seat out & completely taking it apart-job - which is why the come up with ridiculos quotes when you not mention this.. Switch & light alone shouldn't be too much (kit alone was about 100€ for a 997 if I remember correctly - should be about the same for the 996)

I don't have any pics but I can take the seat out of the family car and put it in the GT3 again and get some for you. Are there any specific areas that you want to see regarding the fitment? Thinking about it now the car's belt would be routed differently if the child was young and using the 5-point harness in the seat itself - I've never tried that but can give it a go. My children are old enough that they are basically sitting on the seat and using the car's 3-point belt as their restraint, threaded through the seat cutouts as instructed.

Am I correct in thinking that you only need to deactivate the passenger airbag if you are using a rear facing seat ? If the child is in a forward facing seat, can the airbag stay live ? Thanks

Advice is to have the passenger seat pushed as far back as possible.

2stis, Thanks- that would be great. Just a pic or two of its general position on the seat would be perfect. So long as that bit works working out securing is usually pretty straight forward.

I put the seat back in the car tonight and took a couple of pics for you. I'd say the seat is held in place nicely by the bucket. Even with noone sat in it it doesn't rock around side to side, but is not so tight that you have to jam it into position, so I don't think it is going to wear the edges of the seat unduly if used for prolonged periods. Anyway, pictures below - let me know if you need any others/close ups:

That's exactly the seat I us and in mine it fits deeper into the bucket at the base.
Earlier in the thread someone asked about airbags and said they only need to be turned off for a rear facing baby seat. That's not quite true - pushing the seat to its most rearward position is also common advice with a kid on a booster or group 2 seat, but it is better to turn off completely for young kids. Think of it this way- on activation rather than the heavy adult head and airbag meeting in perfect cushioning harmony, they can instead take the full force of an airbag at the point of inflation- like being punched by mike Tyson. Like most things in a car they are designed for the 90th percentile adult.
That's why I have had the deactivation bar fitted in mine. It's £200 or something.
