Please excuse my out loud ponderings again but wondered what the forum opinion is on running an average mile 993TT over a 997TT or 996TT S for daily duties as a second car? The car would do maybe 5000miles a year consisting of the occasional drive to the office and as a runabout for my wife. The kids would get in the back occasionally. It would spend winters on the road.

The 993 should hold its value or thereabouts while the other two continue to depreciate. Maintenance l guess would be similar. I could own a dream car while filling our second car needs. Would you consider the inherent safety of the three to be similar - all AWD, dual airbags, good brakes, ABS etc?

Any PH'ers running a 993TT as a daily?

Cheers
Simon

I ran mine as a daily/only car for a five years with no issues at all, only became a second car when I decided to upgrade it (which has taken a little longer than expected hence the need for another car in the meantime). Rear tyres were a bit of a cost, but lasted just as long as the rears on the NSX that I ran as a daily before the 993tt.

Steve, was the car comfortable and ok in the winter? My wife has doubts because of the age, I can understand that as she only sees them as transport. I guess rear tyres will be an issue on any Turbo

Hello, I think you can only judge comfortable by driving one. I think its comfortable and but some may not. Yes drove all weathers no problem, not as secure as an Audi in snow for example but far from impossible.

Just sold an Evo IX so I reckon it will seem pretty soft in comparison smile Thanks for the advice

not a TT, but I drove my 993 as an everyday car through the winter. Lively and comfy. Fabulous. Even got winter tyres for it, but never got the weather to try them out frown

I have used mine for a daily (short) run to work and then longer runs at weekends (to counter the short weekday duties) for the last 18 months - about 5k pa. My 6yr old twin boys love travelling in the back ("do the turbos daddy"). It's been absolutely fine and easy to drive in poor weather including snow and with an assisted clutch (which other 993's don't have) even that's no hardship in traffic. I ran a 993C4 for 9 years prior to the turbo as a daily driver as well. I feel very lucky to be able to use the turbo daily and whilst it has cost more to run than the C4 and it won't help its re-sale (if I ever must) as the miles pile on, it was always intended to be used rather than to remain a low mileage garage queen.

I've just been doing exactly that over the last 3yrs odd, recently brought a maxi cose rosi for my boy to go in the back. Absolutely no issue driving all seasons. Comfort wise, probably not as good as a new 'version' but the 993 makes up for it in character by a long shot.

Unfortunately I just don't use mine enough now to warrant keeping, which is/will break my heart. But I will definitely be back in the future..

Good stuff guys, you all seem to have no real issues running one as a daily. I think my other half still needs a little convincing on a 14yr old car over a something much newer, she doesn't quite buy the argument that a 14yo 911 is still much more competent and safe than a lot of the new cheap stuff sold today. I will keep working that angle smile

You should really go and drive one.

993 turbos are heavier in feeling and slower witted (less rev happy) than 996/997 turbos.
All Porsche turbos are often seen as 'blunt' instruments, lacking finess. I feel that it is much more the case with the older turbos (993).

There is a substantial difference between these models.

You may or may not like what you see once you drive one but at least you will know for sure afterwards. Opinions here are very biased and you may not see things in the same way at all once you have driven the car.

Get your missus to drive it (you are bound to love it), mine couldnt get comfortable in the 993 and found the floor hinged pedals to be too odd. In essence she was'nt going to make any allowance for the fact that the car was "classic" she just wanted something easy to drive. On her behest I sold my 993 and bought a 997S, it would have been chirlish to ignore her!

Well last night I got the rather unexpected sign off on the 993, a PH'er linked to this great vid of the 993/997 and once she had watched it her resistance to the 993 faded.

Now to take the advice of Eddie and others and drive a 993 and a 997 to make sure this is the right path for us. At least its now a serious option. I am pretty excited at the thought of the 993 to be honest but have a few niggling doubts of my own to work through first.

Yes thansk to the lucky owner of that blue 993, its lovely and no doubt helped sway the sign off somewhat. Spent most of the moring trawling the market, from all I have found this looks like the most appealing car right now

http://www.paul-stephens.com/Porsche-911-993-Turbo...

71k miles though, if we put 5k per year on her she will be up to high 80's. Still that would be bugger all for a car of that age I guess. Any comments or observations on this car would be welcome smile
