Sorry guys, cant post in the legal forums...
Insurance.. well, i guess i do need it.
But do i need to Insure the car if its in the garage and not driven? It currently has a years TAX and MOT, and if i feel the need to go out for a sunny drive i get temporary insurance on it.
A friend of mine told me that if a car was taxed, it needed to be insured too? Is this correct? Seems a bit of a rip off to me.
The reason why its not insured and driven regualery? Well, i have too many cars. I'm trying to sell at least 1 of them before i make the TVR a daily driver.

Put the car on SORN, do not send in the tax disc and get day insurance when you want to take it out.

The Taimar that's in bits that we've got which we are currently re-building, the insurance for that is with a mileage limit of 1 miles (might even have been zero, can't remember). I'm sure if you phone around some specialist insurers and explain your position, you should be able to get some sort of deal.

Simple answer really.
Here is my scenario: Insurance ran out 5th August, tax runs out 31st August. Car is kept in workshop 6 months of year over the winter. I decide to SORN the car online on the 5th to co-incide with the insurance expiry which I duly do. The on screen confirmation says it will be effective from 1st September when the tax runs out. I think well I can be fined for no insurance, A call to the DVLA was made.
You have to in this scenerio, which seems the same as yours, send in your tax disc and declare a SORN on a V14 which should be posted to the DVLA. Obviously they will refund any months owed.

Yeah, i understand it. Just cant believe the ball ache its going to cause.
If i SORN it now for what will be less than a month then i will end up paying 2 months TAX (Thay backdated the TAX and will forward date it when SORN) So thats 2 months TAX for 2 days driving it.
And then when i get TAX on it again when i want it on the road i expect i will loose another month.
Might wait for the letter too arrive and then insure it for another week?

Im surprised you dont want it insured in case of fire/theft/garage roof falls in etc etc, also if you can afford to have several cars you can surely afford an extra few hundred quid to cover your pride and joy.

you can usualy get a 'laid up' policy for cars which are, well laid up so it is insured, incase of theft, fire, damage etc. just not to use on public roads, which is a bit stupid really as its no more insured on the road than one without, but if you go on the computer or past a anpr camera it will say you are covered.

Its covered under other insurances i have. To be honest, if it catches fire or the garage roof falls in then the car will be the least of my worry's anyway. Laid up insurance is a good idea, unfortunately most insures want the car to be SORNED. Such a pain in the ass! Part of the reason why i'm not Just SORNing the car is because its such a pain. Its an odd position when if you dont have road tax it makes the car legal. Might just have to bite the bullit and get insurance for it. Does anyone know what really happens if you just wait?

im under the understanding they are alot of insurance companies out there to give a family/traders type insurance if they is 3 or more cars/van/bike with extra named drivers as required and would work out cheaper, adding your wife to the policy should actually lower the premium in many cases
i think you can even get a policy that would say insure you and your wife on any car you own up to a certain value you just tell insurance company what cars you have and they are covered again a min number of cars required
