G pipe vs De cat sound

Is there much difference in sound between the two?
Im assuming the g pipe was made for the cars post 92 model year
When I saw thread title, knew it would be you!Im assuming the g pipe was made for the cars post 92 model year
We have the same questions in our heads it seems (I also wondered what plastic induction was and was going to start a thread until I saw yours yesterday!)
In last few days I have seen one standard exhaust, one de-cat and one g-pipe.
They all sound great coming from my turbo - goes without saying.
The de-cat is loudest, by far (waking neighbours loud)but what I liked about it was that if you do not rev it hard, it is a nice burble. g-pipe is a good compromise between the de-cat and the standard. . . not overly difficult to change between them from what I have been told.. . and not sure about if the year is significant

Haha I'm busy learning about my new car pork . We have the same questions in our heads it seems (I also wondered what plastic induction was and was going to start a thread until I saw yours yesterday!)

Henry at Portiacraft just confirmed needs a cat unless I get it change every year or have an obliging mot man ;-)

Just saw your other thread - congrats!!!
I was very close to going to see that one.
Enjoy!
Many tks m8. Spent a good while chewing over various models and from my point of view the 964 C2 makes sense. The colour combo and everything else adds up and Potiacraft are fair it wud seem so stuff it I dived at it. It's a great basis for a good car I recon to run alongside my gt3 I was very close to going to see that one.
Enjoy!
PS the cars been very much looked after mechanically with JZM all over the maintenance invoices

AFAIK the G pipe was never made or put on a 964 at the factory. I believe it's an aftermarket item introduced to replace the final silencer. It gives a much deeper/louder noise and saves a chunk of weight. Personally I think the G pipe noise is not very 'Porsche-like'. A de-cat retains the 'Porsche-like' noise but raises it up a bit. Add a de-cat or G-pipe and the noise will be about 100 db. Add both and you'll be just over 105 db (too loud for most track days).
The other alternative is a cup pipe which is a bypass for the middle silencer that was fitted to 964 cup cars. Here's the difference between a cup pipe and a standard system when I changed to it:

Now that I've got a decat, I've took the cup pipe off and put the middle silencer back on because a de-cat and cup would be too loud for trackdays. The cup pipe is also known to blow out the final silencer given time.

The standard 964RS lightweight left the factory with the normal C2 exhaust system ie cat + primary silencer + secondary silencer. This gets in at about all UK trackdays, if you noise test at 4500rpm it makes 99db.
964 Cup cars had cup pipe fitted instead of primary silencer , so trackdays restricted to 105db ones unless you fit something eg tip silencer.
A standard C2 that has a decat and a cup pipe fitted with only a secondary silencer left on will make 107 db on noise test above.

Ok so all I'm doing is sticking a G pipe on with the cat in place still. Will this make the spa noise limit?? 964 Cup cars had cup pipe fitted instead of primary silencer , so trackdays restricted to 105db ones unless you fit something eg tip silencer.

Actually they have a C4 they are building to nearly new condition with the interior reconditioned by Southbound thoi it's up for big numbers. It's had a 9k rebuild also.
I'll try the g pipe and if I don't like it I'll get a d cat fitted and take my chances
Yes I have seen the car and was tempted. But 28k. No. Just too much for me for a 964. And this is the car Inwas talking anout that has the g Pipe. I'll try the g pipe and if I don't like it I'll get a d cat fitted and take my chances

Very expensive. I wonder why the previous owner spent £9K on an engine rebuild and then immediately sold it? There are still enough low mileage minters around not to have to resort to spending big money on a full restoration project like this. uktrailmonster said:

Maybe some people think even a low mileage minter can need a rebuild 911god said:

Sure, but there's a big difference between a bit of preventative maintenance and a full blown restoration project like this. I'm sure £28K will reflect the true cost of the restoration, but I'm not convinced it makes the car worth £28K if you know what I mean. Be interesting to see how quickly it sells at that price.uktrailmonster said:

I know exactly what you mean. Will take a while to sell for sure and as you say it's someone/JZM understandably trying to recoup costs. Also the C4 isn't the obvious choice for alot of buyers nowadays. I had a 993 C4 and even Chris Franklins expertise could only do so much. Mind you he was relieving me of nearly 3 k so I don't suppose he was bothered hahaI don't doubt the JZM car will be sensational when it's done
