Hi all,
I have just fitted a proper rear wing to my track car and would like some feedback from those of you that run with a wing. Car weighs 970kg with 52%/48% front/rear distribution. Making 330bhp+ with torque to match.
Also fitting a front splitter. Tested on the road (rear wing only) up to 70mph and it feels Ok with no noticable difference to balance.
My thinking was to keep the wing forward above the rear of the back tyres.

Cheers

Mark

There was an excellent article in this month's TrackDriver magazine where the writer used some simple CFD software to test his hypotheses on various wings/positions.

The rear wing seems to be sitting in the right place IMO with regards to getting good flow to it, not in the wake of the roof/rear hatch which would make it less effective (a far too common mistake), however placing it further rearwards gives you more 'leverage' over the rear wheels with what downforce it does make. The front splitter will be important to tune/maintain the balance of the car's aerodynamics. It has to be said - without proper testing it's really hard to know the effect on balance. Furthermore, the wing may be generating downforce (although not a huge amount as the angle of attack and camber are not too aggressive), but overall the car as a whole may still be generating lift at high speeds, perhaps just less than before. Aero really only starts to be relevant above 40-50mph (when it exceeds rolling resistance), so at 70mph the effect will probably be small. Hopefully at three-figure speeds you will see some difference. If you find the balance too far forward (i.e. rear gets loose), take a strip of carbon flatstock or chunky plastic with you to add onto the rear wing as a gurney flap to help tune as a short-term quick fix.

You will add drag, obviously - although you seem to have enough power to overcome the modest amount added. But underflooor/diffuser treatments are generally much more efficient and beneficial than sticking large aerofoils on the car. All IMO of course - your mileage may vary, please seek professional advice before committing to a high-speed corner hoping that a wing will provide 10mph more apex speed etc. etc.

Your car looks fantastic, love the MGB.

I run a Mk3 Toyota Mr2 as my track day car and was having stability problems above 80mph, the front end was the main problem. Increased track 50mm rear and 25mm front, a rear wing and front splitter that goes back under the car have made a big difference. I am at ~930Kg but only have 201hp and 145lbft (it has a built/tuned 2zz-GE engine from an Exige). Since the changes the car has been much more stable and I am very happy with the improvements.

The wing is an APR carbon one with carbon gurney (sp?) flap. I think at the moment it is too low and should be a bit higher in the airstream, its on the list to look at over winter smile

sorry if the picture looks huge, cant work out how to reduce it in the IMG tag smile
