I don't think The Secret Footballer is one person. The column is well written in a consistent style, which suggests that a Guardian journo is speaking to several sources, and aggregating their experiences into a column.

Candidates often suggested include David James, Danny Murphy, James Beattie and Kevin Davies.

After reading this yesterday and then looking into it a bit more i though it could have been davies.
