I wonder if anyone can help.

My misses bought a Golf 1.6 FSI on a 55 plate about 4 years ago. Maybe twice a year it has needed topping up ever so slightly with coolant, which i wasnt overly concerned with.

More recently however it has been losing / using it at quite a rate. So much so that the light came on the other day and it was a good inch below the minimum marker.

Has anybody had a similar experience, if so what did it turn out to be? Leaky rad maybe? Leaky thermostat housing? I cant see any dampness.

Any help is much appreciated.

(On a slightly happier note, i have just acquired a 2001 A4 Avant 1.8 5V B5. 75k on the clock, in Santorin Pearl Blue.)

Yes, these can leak from the inlet/outlet pipes at the bottom corners or you could be unlucky and have a hole (stone).

I dont think the 1.6 has much history of HG failures, so are you sure you cant spot anything?

Unfortunately, a replacement at the dealers will be around £400. The proper way is to remove the bumper and lots
of AC pipework 2.5 hours labour.

I had the same issue with my Golf 2.0FSI along with a multitude of other issues.

I know it's not much help but 2 different VW Garages were unable to sort it out on several occasions-one in South Wales and one in Hampshire. A VW independent 'specialist' in Hampshire wasn't able to sort it out either. A replacement radiator made no difference whatsoever other than my pocket was around £450 lighter....

In the end, I traded it in and got my current car instead. It was an incredibly frustrating experience. If you do manage to figure out what the issue is, can you put it on here please? I'd love to know what it was as it appears your problem is identical to what mine was.

I know that replacement figure because a colleague at work definately has a leaky radiator, you can see the leak middle bottom.

I've not heard of any other major problems with Golf radiators, but let us know.

I had a leaky radiator on my 2.0 fsi. It cost about £350 all in to replace at a trusted specialist.

After this was done it sprung a leak from a hose coming from the cylinder head to the heater matrix so check that. You will see dampness/coolant on top of the gearbox if it is the same set up as mine. VW have an updated replacement hose and clip as the older ones leak after a while.

That was about £60 all in to replace at the same specialist.
