Here's a random question for the 'what car' collective.

Were off on holiday to Slovakia with some friends over Christmas and New Year and for reasons I won't bore you with, are considering taking 1 car (which I will drive to meet the others in Bratislava airport) to use for our holiday.

Here are some criteria:

4wd (to cope with the weather and roads)
Carry 8 people + luggage
Cost less than £2k in ownership (once I've bought it and sold it a few weeks later) as this is what our hire cars are being quoted at :-(
Cost less that 10k to buy

Does such a thing exist? I've seen the Nissan Elgrand - not very thrilling but looks like it'd do the job...

I don't normally go for 'what cars' but thought this one might throw up some interesting options!

All suggestions gratefully received !

Matthew.

PS - 4 x MX5s isn't an option !

Wasnt there a VW Caravelle Syncro? Rare as hens teeth though, but that would fit the bill...

Eight people to Slovakia? Pity those in the back, and middle and front come to that.

Only 8 from the airport and around the place whilst we're there...

Liking the suggestions - thx... :-)

The amazon only seats 7 but the (smaller!!!) Colorado does seat 8, each with its own seatbelt. Although the rear most seats are for smallest. The current land cruiser seats 7 but the previous one definitely does seat 8.

I'd go for this and keep the roofbox in the car during the drive down to keep wind noise and fuel consumption down a bit. Will be a much better place to be than a Defender for the haul down ....

I think you're restricting your choices with the awd requirement.

What about something like this with winter tyres: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Toyota Regius / Granvia would suit, 3.0TD and 4WD available but luggage space isn't great (neither is the Elgrand with the seats down). Mazda Bongo would also fit your requirements. If you have eight people with luggage a standard MPV like these won't be big enough I reckon.
You could get a Regius (they are about the best) and get a trailer / towbar for the luggage, all in for a few grand and then sell it again when you're back, cheapest way I reckon.

Upon further investigation, a small selection of amazons did actually have 8 seats and 8 seat belts (90 series). Both of our 90 series amazons just happened to have all 8 seat belts. Rather odd we just got lucky I guess!

They're fantastic places to be - rather comfortable, easy to drive, reasonable level of mod cons etc :-)

Mazda Bongo in original people carrier format.

Get one with the factory raising roof in the winter, sell it in the spring and you might even make a profit!

I still think the caravelle is the best choice but I've just been reminded of these -

Don't think they did a bus version though

There is a caravelle on PH at the moment:
