Many insurers seem to be operating a 16 year old cut off policy on Euro breakdown cover & insurance.
If your car is 16 years old or more they often will not offer the breakdown element at any price.
If you approach the AA & RAC they may offer breakdown cover but the price goes through the roof when your car passes it's 16th birthday.
The solution is a decent classic car policy.
You typically lose out on NCB & track day cover, but if the Euro breakdown is what you want a classic policy is definitely the way forward.
In my experience the NCB issue is irrelevant on our cars anyway; bonus, discount... my hat, it all comes down to number of past claims, cost of the claim & your driver record (DD, disqualifications ect).
When buying car insurance you should always ask yourself these three questions, & in this order:
1) The package, does the policy suit me & what I want from it?
2) The service, will your insurer/broker look after you properly if the s
t hits the fan?
3) Price, am I buying the right policy for me at a market competitive price
In my opinion too many people put price at the top of their list when choosing car insurance and then forget the other two key deciders.
REMEMBER, YOU BUY CAR INSURANCE TO GET YOU OUT OF TROUBLE SHOULD YOU BE UNLUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR BREAKDOWN.
If you buy a policy on price only & then need to claim, that smug feeling of saving yourself £50 - £100 will soon be forgotten if you end up finding out your insurer is a professional non-payer (as many are).
I have a 5,000 mile classic type policy purchased from MSM that gives me UK & full Euro cover including the all important breakdown element that includes repatriation of driver, passenger & vehicle to your chosen UK address.
I managed to swing class 1 business use too so I can visit my clients in the TVR when the sun shines, and all this with a realistic excess.
My modifications are noted but never charged for, & there is zero loading for penalty points.
Every year I test the market, every year MSM are the cheapest.
The killer punch is not only are they cheapest, but MSM provide my ideal package, I dont track my car but I am very much a serial Euro touring TVR owner.
I have had one "not at fault" claim since being with MSM & they were absolutely fantastic, so while the price is great the service is too.
Give MSM a call, highly recommended:http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/
