This evening I finally liberated my BTR diff drain plug woohoo

Damn thing was stuck in there so solid welding a nut on the end of it was the only way to free it off.

Any road up, I was a bit surprised by what came out.

I'm probably wrong, but it just doesn't look right to me, way longer & fatter than I expected and with a much causer thread.

Can someone familiar with the BTR diff drain plug tell me if this looks correct, or has someone crammed a big old flanged bolt in there at some time in my car's life.

Thanks, Dave.

Thats just what mine was like after I hammered an old socket on it to get it out. It's also used to hold the back casing on. I replaced mine with a flanged bolt and a dowty washer.

Thanks drive2tractors, that's good news.

It just wasn't quite what I was expecting scratchchin

The new magnetic plug I had on hand & ready to fit proved to be a non starter frown

A new flanged bolt and a dowty washer sounds spot on to me thumbup

I'll nip down to Orbital Fasteners tomorrow.

Agreed, but if it's doubling up as one of the bolts holding the back casing on like drive2tractors suggests I can now see why it's so long.

When you remove it there's a shoulder in the hole too, the first 10mm depth is a larger diameter than the bolt?

Buggered if I know why?

What I can tell you is, the bd was in there tighter than a very very tight thing.

Whoever fitted it in there last was a complete animal.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was Bruce at the BTR factory in Oz laugh

Boy how crap is that.

My old skool GKN diff has a magnetic plug which I think is original. Which goes to show newer is not always better biggrin

For the benefit of anyone else looking to replace their BTR diff drain plug, the bolt you need is:

M12 x 30 hex flange bolt (23mm Across flange)

Fit it with an M12 dowty or copper crushable washer.

Hope this helps, Dave.

Hi Dave, the your bolt is the same as mine, yes it was a bcensoredd to get out, luckily it was on a ramp in the garage, even so the mechanic was bounceing off the wrench just to crack the thing, I was afraid the head was going to shear off.

She is running sweet now after all the fuss on stuttering, just hope it does not come back soon, going to have a go at the venting for the tank over the weekend (huge thunder storms here) and drop the exhaust to look at the prop-shaft.. Thanks for the notes on the private mail, will catch up with you over the weekend.
