My mother has a 1997 Peugeot 306 1.4 LX in snot green . It has 100k on the clock, we bought it at 75k and have owned it for 6 years . Over our time owning it, it has had it's exhaust and back box fall off at 40 mph and various small mechanical issue's we have put right . Also my mother reversed into a beemer and created a hole in the bumper . So all in all i reckon it's nearly dead although it only has 100k and i have seen examples with more on the clock. The only sign of problems to come is a loud rattle from the engine at low revs so guys do you think it should be scrapped and replaced or given a good seeing to by a mechanic with the money we would put towards a new car . confused

Do you know a garage or mechanic who could give it the once over and advise you as to the condition and whether it is worth spending money on?

Does she like the car or would she be just as happy with something else? 25K in six years isn't much though. Short journeys don't do cars any favours.

She's the as long as it goes a to b type . She kinda leaves car choices to me as i am the car nut of the house . For the sought of cars we could afford i reckon a 306 with some leg left in it beats them all . Another concern is, would i get insured on a 1.4 when im 17 even in her name it wont be cheap as she lost her no claims when she bumped into that beemer .

It all depends on what the rattle is. It might be cheap to fix in which case it would be worth keeping it bar any other significant faults. Better the devil you know and all that.

I shed a manly tear when I scrapped my 406.

It was mainly a financial decision-mechanically it was sound, and the interior was in top nick. But the exterior was getting terrible, and it had a couple of shunts that meant it wouldn't pass the MOT without a lot of work.

The idea was-why piss away money repairing a damaged car, that still wont look straight after the repairs, as the panels are bent.

So me and my mum promptly bought a used 3 series and a week later I had to spend money getting the coolant system repaired hehe

Either use some damn good man maths, or keep the thing. The better the devil you know really is true!
