Good afternoon all. I'm having the classic scuttle repair carried out just now. I purchased the corner repair panel which is due to be welded in place while the screen is out. Now that the screen has been removed it has exposed the usual rusty areas around the scuttle panel but it looks mainly superficial in most places. I have asked to have the area taken back to bare metal then treated with anti rust before priming etc. Assuming that the work is done to a decent standard - roughly how long would you expect this repair to last before requiring attention again? The garage doing the work were slightly reluctant to give a defintive answer. Many thanks.

At a guess, if you are not using the car everyday or in all weathers, and if you get someone who knows what they are doing to re-install your windscreen, AKA GLASSMAN who frequents this forum. Probs will not need doing again in the next 15 - 20 years.
You need someone who knows what he's doing. My windscreen had to be scrapped because it had been re-fitted badly when the scuttle had been done by a previous owner.

If they are getting rid of all the rust, I would hope it wouldn't come back at all.

It's what causes the car to rust in the first place that needs sorting, and thats the windscreen moving around trapping depris under the rubber seal surround, the debris then scratches through the protective cover of the paint. If the windscreen is refitted badly, it will rust just as quick .... if not quicker than before. Well that's what I've been led to believe.

Nick Moss once told me "If you haven't got any rust on your Porsche it's because you haven't found it yet"
Word of advice: Get someone who knows what they're doing to fit your screen. And don't fall for any of the major screen fitters flannel.Your insurance company will allow you to choose a fitter if you put your foot down.
I had 3 supplied from OPC before they could find one to fit, so good luck....never again.

Mines going in for this and full front end painted on the 17th, don't think there's any guarantee about how quickly it will return if at all. I'll be happy with 5 years but we'll see what happens.

Thanks guys. The windscreen fitter has experience of these cars so I hope the process goes smoothly with no creaking afterwards. Looking forward to having the car back at the end of the week as I'm having withdrawal symptoms from not driving it for a few days.

An update. The repair panel wasn't required after all. Once the rust was removed the repair was possible by using a build up of lead by a specialist. The complete surround was taken back to bare metal and treated with anti rust. I'm very happy with the result. The new rubber windscreen surround looked like it hadn't been re-fitted properly. It was folding in on itself but the chap came back out and it seems to be fixed now. The complete job took a little longer than planned ( 3 weeks ) however it's done now and the screen doesn't creak. Curiously I found that some body repairers were a bit reluctant to take this job on.

The curling of the rubber is normal. The screens are not a perfect fit. If it happens again, just lift the rubber over the frame and push it outwards if you know what I mean.
