Well it sadly looks like the Mail on Sunday has it in for cyclists today, immigrants and terrorists are getting the weekend off:

The hit-and-run Lycra louts:

How thuggish minority of cyclists are terrorising our roads with one elderly pensioner being hit twice in a month

'A law that will force cyclists to take a proper test and abide by the Highway Code is long overdue'
'My mother might have died last week'

Let's hope they don't start another one of their campaigns!

By the time the Daily Wail starts championing it you know any cause is pointless.

Dont slip all the blame onto the cyclists, I am for ever telling my missis Green DOES NOT mean its OK to cross, look in case someone has jumped the lights.

Often I see peds with their bloody ear phones stuck in their lugs, hoods up, as soon as the crossing goes to Green, they stepmout with even the slightest glance up the road.

Mind you the sod should have stopped and helped her up. Remember people cyclists cant stop on a penny. There will always be the minority of idiots on our roads.

My son who is 30 still uses the green cross road, because thats what we taught him that when he was growing up.

Not saying that I'm in favour of a test but, in the good old days, before the flood, when the king was a boy, I had to do a cycling proficiency test when I was 11 at school.

It was good as it meant that kids got into riding bikes, safely, on the road at an early age. The amount of people riding on the paths is insane these days

They still do the cycling proficiency tests. Couple of months back it seemed like every road I turned into had 20+ kids on bikes in bright orange jackets practicing turning right or whatever.

The problem here isn't that they are cyclists, its that they are thugs. A licence is pointless, unless all cycles have to be plated as well, otherwise you still wont be able to identify them.

I think it depends on the area. In Bedfordshire, it's not happening in any schools (discussed this earlier in the week with my OH, she's a teacher in a bunch of schools)

They wait until the light turns green?! How well behaved.

I didn't read the daily mail article because it is a daily mail article, but the headline DOES say it is a minority of cyclists.

DM article is DM-ish. I wouldn't mind a drive to get cycle training (bikeability by its rather silly official name) taught in more/all schools though.

The scary thing is the reporter, who admits to being completely unable to control a bicycle, is legally allowed to drive, where things are happening much quicker, you have less ability to manoeuvre in tight spaces, and the results of making a mistake are far worse.

I think I'll wait for the Daily Mash to produce some proper reporting on this subject, rather than one reporters personal view masquerading as a news story.

Not true, I pay road tax for my two cars...Its a misnomer that cyclists dont pay road tax and as you cant ride a bike and drive a car at the same time, Cyclists are doing motorists a favour, coz they are one less car on the roads, but are still paying their dues whilst being nearly killed at every roundabout and junction!!

Compare and contrast with:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1250746/...

She's a spurned former mistress of Boris Johnson, who seems to take any opportunity to deride anything he supports. Including lazily repeating articles from a couple of years.
