Im thinking of buying a 964 C2 Tiptronic. I know the tiptronic is seen as less desirable, but i do love automatics and old 911's. The negatives as i see them are:- it will be harder to sell (although i'm planning to keep it as a second vehicle long term) and it will not hold its value or accrue in value at quite the same rate as a manual.

Has anyone any thoughts on the subject or comments on the performance of the tiptronic box?

Agreed. If I loved autos and old 911's I guess that's what I would buy!

Not quite.
Well I do love the two of those things also. But I don't think they go together very well. My 996tt is a tip but have been looking out for a 964 and although the tips are tempting due to the rock bottom price they just don't work together well. Hence it would have to be manual or nothing. I would even sacrifice body shape over a tip, i.e if it were tip coupe vs manual targa I would have to take the targa.
Tip older Porsche are cheap for a reason - the box doesn't suit the car.
And having said all of this go and drive one. If you think it works who is anyone on here to tell you otherwise!?

Hi I owned a Tip Targa 964 until recently and loved it. I was after a manual originally for the obvious reasons and Id never had an automatic car before this.

When I test drove the tip I was convinced it would be fun, then after a couple of months I really enjoyed using the tip on the country roads and the auto on the boring ones. I believe the Tip is a tad slower than the Manual though...7.something seconds as opposed to 6? But easy to get the published 0-60 time every time as you don't have to master a clutch and gear change!

That said, if or when I get my next 911 I would go for a manual I think. But if the right tip came up for the right money, I wouldn't shy away. I do think it effects resale as less people want an auto I found, but if you are in for the long run perhaps this doesn't matter. As for the Targa, loved it. I prefer the Coupe look, but for me personally I like my weekend car to have the option of roof off. Cabs looked fun but one didn't come up that I liked as I was looking to buy. The Targa option worked well for me.

Best of luck! Dave

Thanks for the info Dave. Did it take you a long time to sell the tip?

I bought my C4S Tip because I'm happy with an auto for normal use. I've found I leave in auto and just use the tip for knocking it down a cog when needed...

For normal driving, I just leave my C2 Tip in auto mode. The car has plenty of torque, even when the gearbox is being a bit lazy.
I actually prefer the 4-speed Tip gearbox to the 6-speed auto in my BMW E61. That one always seems to be changing gear, and hangs on to gears a little longer than I'd like in normal traffic. It's a little too sensitive.

Although manuals command a premium at present, I wonder if this will be the case in 10 years? As more performance and luxury cars are being sold with autos, maybe people will want autos in their classics?

I had a 964 Tip and I hated it. It is such an agricultural gearbox. Mind you I can't stand autos anyway, but it re-enforced everything I hate about them. My point is that you should just drive one and see what you like. If you love it then get one!

Could be something in that.

Surely if you like automatics then the tiptronic is the way - might be cheaper to buy too which can't be a bad thing.

I think you made your mind up already. If you do like autos, then you will be happy with a tiptronic. Personally, I couldn't live with it.

The tip box in mine changes really smoothly. The only time I really notice it is the first time it changes up to third from pulling away, and the first time it changes down a couple of miles later. Still smoother than Most manuals I've used, and nicer that my Beemer.
