Hi All

Had my Mk5 Golf GTI serviced yesterday at a VW dealer. It's on time and distance service regime. I checked the service book last night and they've ticked the box indicating that non-long life oil was used.

I've done a bit of Googling and it looks like long life oil should always be used regardless of the service regime? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Cheers

Gold ones use long life oil, others colours can use either.

Indeed, all to do with the weight. Heavy paint, heavy oil.

Something that has vag 507 accreditation. Castrol edge would be my personal choice

Anything VAG 504.00 compliant is sufficient for a Golf Gti

They will have reset the service light accordingly so the computer will acknowledge the oil type and bleep at you in about 9-12 thousand miles.

If you service it annually then it will be fine.

We always use non longlife as it makes us more money in the long run smile

Using the same in my 2006 Octavia VRS which has the same engine as the MK5 GTI. This is the stuff to use I believe. I hope.

Most dealers use longlife no matter the service regime these days but as long as it meets the specs it will be fine.

Thanks for the replies. It's a vw main dealer so I'm sure they used the right spec oil, just not Longlife, so I won't worry about it. I only do about 4000 miles a year so the car is serviced every 12 months.

I'm going to give them a call to find out what they used so I know what to top up with.

you dont have to use the VW long life oil, its very expensive and if you are doing normal anual mileage no need to use it after 3 yrs warranty period - just remember to change it every 12 months.

Thanks for the advice. Car's back in on Thursday for a paint repair so I'll pick up a litre of top up oil then. They managed to scrape the front bumper getting it in or out of the service bay.

The ESP light has come on this morning and won't go out so I'll get them to diagnose that at the same time. Seems a bit of a coincidence that it's come on two days after a service. Could it be related, or am I being paranoid?

Also, about a quarter of the high level brake light isn't working. I check all lights, fluids and rubber every weekend and it was fine on Saturday. They spotted it was out during the service and advised me when I collected the car.

Twelve months of trouble free motoring. One day at a main dealer and it's riddled with faults scratchchin

Don't you believe it - I had my A4 TDI serviced by an Audi main dealer. When I looked at the invoice I could tell from the price the incorrect oil had been used but the dealer wouldn't have it, not until I contacted Audi Customer Service at Milton Keynes who were not amused and put the dealer right.
