I love the Esprit, and had experience of them (not as an owner) as new cars up until the S4.
I think (hope) that by next summer i might find myself in a position to own an Esprit. But it would have to be a 4-cyliner car. However i remember them as being very dull from a noise point of view.
Can much be done (without spending thousands) on getting some audible drama out of an Esprit SE?
I know it’s never going to sing like an F355 or howl like a 911, but i had a Mitsubishi EVO with a Blitz Exhaust, Induction and blow of valve and I would be happy if the solid, hard edged burble and the whoooshing, popping, wastegate fluttering sounds could be achieved with an Esprit?
Also - would 12-14K get me a very good example of an Esprit SE?

Decat and a Larini or Quicksilver exhaust and you're away, all for less than £500! The wastegate can be made much more audible along with a great induction noise by deleting the charcoal noise reducing filter, easy and free and if you want a BOV, fit one - plenty available! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-Li-vWLeNU

I replaced the cat & back box on my S4s not long after getting her last year, cost around £300 & she now sounds superb. Also fitted a KN panel filter & with the sunroof tilted or window down you get a nice induction sound. Thought about a dump valve but not sure if the noise would get on my nerves after a while so jury is still out. These engines can sound fantastic, especially towards the redline. £12K should get you a very nice SE or possibly an S4 but you need to look around. There was an S4s advertised on here recently for £12.5K, looked very nice & not suprisingly didn't seem to hang around long before it was sold. Good look with the search & have a look over on The Lotus Forums for more info. Phil.

Hi Richard,
The problem the Esprit is faced with is it being a 4 pot mid engined car with not much travel for the exhaust to generate a great sound. I've heard a few good sounding Esprits but not too many. There's a difference between nice and loud if you know what I mean. I've heard good things about Larini and also decatting is a good a cheap option. You can also go down the route of a custom jobby for about £400 in stainless. Most exhaust places can accomodate you and like I say, it's only a short run so it should be a quick job for these companies. Focus on the power first, then the sound and not about the size and shape of the tailpipe or having twin exits etc.
Regards,
David

Un equal length manifold?
Can create a nice burble in certain applications.

Hi
Currently confused about which path to take. I have a GT3 whcih is de-catted but has a standard back box. Although it sounds 'nice' when warm, it isn't quite the noise I expect and want something louder.
Looking at the quicksilver options - silenced or unsilenced, without a cat?!
Anyone done this - I'm imagining that the Supersports (no silencer) with a cat bypass pipe will be too much, just worried that the Sports (with silencer) is not enough...
Any opinions/experience?

Both the videos I've posted above are of a Quicksilver Supersport and de-cat. 114dB, it was quite loud!

Ah, OK...yep, that's bloody loud. I reckon then that the Sports should be loud enough; the design looks very similar to the Larini?

I have one of SJ stainless backboxes and a decat. The backbox when new silenced quite well but still maintained a nice burble, below 100 dbs I think. After a while though the heat blows the silencing material out back and I end up with 105 dbs of angry-ness. I need a bolt on silencer for track days. Sounds good though...

Yep CC are very strict about the 100db rule and they test all cars hence my bolt on. Still its my local track.
