Only about one in six speed cameras in England and Wales is digital

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19898072

And the (biased) BBC drag rent a quote BRAKE out for their usual bks. I've asked the ABD to make a formal complaint against the BBC for bias.

Nick Batty, from the road safety group Brake, said the charity wanted more speed cameras to be transferred to digital but recognised that road safety partnerships had suffered budget cuts, reducing their ability to update their technology.

"Speed cameras are proven to be effective in reducing devastating crashes and casualties," he explained.

Aptly named guy, isn't he !!!!

The BBC had someone from Safe Speed on the telly this morning to argue with someone from Brake. So less bias there.

Safe Speed said that there have been crashes at camera sites, and claimed these were the fault of cameras, but I suspect that they were really the fault of drivers being rubbish. I wasn't convinced, and I really wanted to agree with them.

I think I'd be more angry about speed cameras if someone could give me a simple clear reason why I should get away with speeding. I speed, but I can't think of a justification for it at all.

You probably don't 'speed.' Since the introduction of speed cameras, virtually all roads have had their speed limits lowered. This has made them artificialy low, i.e. below the 85th percentile value. This is the speed that 85% of drivers won't exceed if there was no speed limit, and has been shown to produce the optimum speed for any given road in regards to a 'safe' speed limit.

That's an odd way to 'think'. I speed but I can't think of a justification for not doing so. Speed limits I experience are usually too low.

Because its so pointlessly arbitary. I drove at 130mph for 20 miles consecutively last month, legally, on a reasonably narrow 2 lane Motorway. A day later, had I chosen to do 80mph on the wider, quieter Motorway I found myself on would be 'speedng' and would result in my conviction for an offence.

Odd. Either it's safe or its not.

You can't get much more singular than '1' biggrin

I didn't see it but I can see why the cameras get the blame for accidents. Or, to be more precise, drivers create accidents by slamming the brakes by the camera, then flooring it once past the white dashes. If your not familiar with the camera locations this can be very dangerous.

I have three points that seem to indicate that I do speed. There are many arbitary laws, and I break lots of them, but my reasons for doing so are because it's fun, or profitable, or thrilling or has such a tiny chance of being detected it's not worth worrying about.

None of those reasons seem to be "good" to me. Also those are the same reasons that people use to justify nasty crimes that I wouldn't commit.

If the limits are "too low" then it's the limit that is wrong, not the enforcement.

That's an odd way to 'punctuate'.

Also you can't think of a justification not to speed? How about the fine and points? I bet you slow down at speed cameras.
