No, this isn't another "what would you buy and dry store", but has anyone here thought of / actually own a car that they intend to keep until it is (hopefully) a classic vehicle?

As a sort of little project Dad and I (and also because at the moment I REALLY don't spend enough time with him) are looking to buy a car, get it properly sorted, and keep in excellent condition until (as I said hopefully!) it will become a classic.

Would be interested to see whether anyone else actually has done this?

Basically anything low volume (and not a special edition of a mass market car) with the engine behind the driver will be a decent bet. Something like a Honda NSX would be my bet.

Yeah, but that's not what I was asking! We've got the type of car sorted! Just interested to hear whether anyone else has / is planning on doing something similar.

Ford Cougar In my opinion smile I own one, its just a differnet looking mondeo buts its quite unique in the way it looks. And iirc 11K Early models but less than 1K C2's (The facelift versions) that i have sold in the uk overall.

I plan on keeping my tvr, like most i am hoping it will become a classic as they are no longer made. In the mean time i will work away at it every winter until it is near mint and just enjoy it in the summer.

Yes, I bought this:

No, its not a testarossa, its a 512TR.

Only 50 brought into the UK.

Its difficult to resist putting miles on it!

I'm hoping to keep it for a reasonable length of time, enjoy the experience and not take a bath on the resell.

Good Ford Pumas will be very hard to come by very soon. Lovely things, most are succumbing to rust and a lack of care due to their low prices. Any left in ten years from now should be suitably rare and loved enough to be appreciating classics.

Too many produced....

Have a look at each car on howmanyleft.com, and make decisions from there. Don't pick something that was too common to begin with. Ford racing puma? Vx220? Std fiat coupe turbo?mid 90s SL?

It could go two ways with the cougar, it may end up a ford classic like the Capri, or it could end up being worth less than a bus fare such as the probe.
I've now had two incredibly low mileage mint cougars and they are great cars. I can't think of a better value car for the money.
I think the cougar may not fetch a fortune as a classic as it never caught on first time round, such as the Capri or escort mk1/2 which now fetch a small fortune.
Think of cars such as the zephyr mk4 which never really caught on in the classic car scene and are worth a fraction of the cost of the more mainstream classic ford.

Bought a Monaro. Plan on keeping it a while to see how many succumb to British weather and bad driving. Only 355 show as insured on the roads at the mo with 25 SORN'd.

Could go either way to be honest with people's impressions of Vauxhalls.

Same here got a 6.0 VXR Monaro and a 6.2 VXR8 as keepers, the R8 is a keeper and see what they become smile

Too many produced?

Original Mini, did they make many of these and are they now classics?

VW Beetle, did they make many of these and are they now classics?

Being mass produced doesn't really mean it won't become a classic, the truth is no one knows what will or won't be a classic in the future. Exceptions being things like 911's and Ferraris like above although certain models of these cars won't increase like others will.

I'd have thought it would come down to how much of a following different cars have, rather than how many were made smile
