You can't splice into later looms. Either a bypass system of proper kit and coding from BMW.

I just bought a detachable from PFJones along with the dedicated E90/91 7 pin electrics.
This way when i throw it into reverse it'll turn off the parking sensors, and it'll also recognise the trailer electrics for bulb warnings and so on.

The dedicated electrics bit was £98, the detachable towbar was around £170 i think (i went for Witter as i have a similar Witter detachable on my 1 series). Westfalia is the BMW OEM kit and was about £190 i think.

I shall be fitting mine this week sometime smile

Fitted the metalwork this morning - pretty straight forward really.
Passed the cable through the same grommet already used for the rear PDC, so the electrics are now sitting in the boot.

Before:

Bumper and lights off:

New beam in place, with tow ball receptacle and 7 pin drop down socket:

After:

Ok, fitted the Westfalia E9x specific wiring this morning, took just under an hour.
Very easy once you've worked out the pictorial instructions (no words at all) and the wiring colour key.
4 small scotchblock type connectors - i'm not usually a fan but these are better than the usual big blue scotchblocks, they clip together loosely and then you use pliers to clamp them down.

Tested with my bike carrier and works a treat, and as promised it turns off the PDC sensors at the rear when you engage reverse with something plugged into the towbar electrics.

Nice job, one question. Did you buy 2 electrics kits? You mention using the Westfalia one (£190), but what is the £98 bit?

Sorry, to clarify:

Westfalia detachable towbar - £190 ish
Witter detachable towbar - £170 ish
Various other non detachables available for less than £100

7 pin 'bypass' universal electrics - £40
Westfalia dedicated BMW E9x 7 pin electrics - £100

I bought the Witter towbar and the Westfalia electrics, because i've had Witter detachables before and i like them and the Westfalia dedicated electrics do things like turn off the reverse parking sensors when a trailer is plugged in. Nothing more annoying than reversing a trailer with a constant loud beeping in your ear!
