If all goes to plan I intend to view a car at the wk end, and if it all checks out i'll hopefully take it. The only issue is the trader has informed me that the car has no tax, as the car is currently classified as disabled for tax purposes (previous owner was registered disabled). When I quizzed him about this he said it's easy to get it sorted, a simple trip to the local DVLA office to fill out a form, and the car can then be taxed in the normal way.

I would be grateful if someone who has brought a car under similar circumstances could clarify further.

Cheers in advance thumbup

I bought my wife's focus 12 months ago under the same circumstances, IIRC there was a form or 2 to fill in, I just rang the DVLA and they sent the stuff out, fairly easy!

Just give them a call.

I've done it.

You'll need to attend your reigonal DVLA office. Few forms to fill out but it's not a difficult process. When you get your V5 back it will show the updated vehicle class.

I didn't need to go to the DVLA office, I did it by post.

Cheers for the info peeps - so for clarification, if I rock up to the DVLA with the correct docs etc, will I be able to tax the car the same day?

I haven't had to do a change of class for a while but I think it has to go off.

Yes just like any other car, except you have to tax it at the DVLA office instead of the post office. After the first time the taxation class has been changed, and you just tax it as normal.

You can normally download the forms in advance too.

Easy at the local DVLA office. Didn't take long and was able to go and pick up the car with a new tax disc.

I saw a £300 car on eBay on a Friday, as a "buy it now" near the end of its time on the Bay of E. I needed a car, and it seemed viable if in reasonable nick so...

I rang them, saying I'd visit the next day.

I called in as arranged, had a sniff round and said I'd buy - "OK next Saturday?" he said. "OK" I replied, did a bit of bartering (asked for a service, got an oil and filter change rolleyes ) and added £100-ish for 6 months' tax. Now, at this time, the car was apparently untaxed but the last tax disc indicated that the taxation class was DISABLED.

However, the trader was offering free "driveaway" Insurance lasting 7 days if I rang Aviva; it was suggested that the trader would be able to "tax" the car if I took this offer up, so I did.

And yeah, verily, the car was taxed PLG for 6 months by the next Saturday - the trader had received the email from Aviva confirming 7 days' Insurance and he'd been to DVLA Sheffield to change the taxation class and buy 6 months' "road tax" for me.

If the dealer wants to sell you the car, they collectively will change the taxation class for you wink . Sort it yourself nuts ?? Stuff 'em if they won't - walk away 'cos it's hassle they are being paid to sort smile .

I'm still driving this 309 3 1/2 years later, by the way cloud9 ...

I'm curious, if you buy a car registered as disabled and don't inform the DVLA it needs tax now, what happens? Would you get a tax reminder for diasbled tax, and you just go to the post office or apply online for the next tax and you wouldn't have to show any proof that your entitled to it? Just wondering what the safeguards to the system are.

I think you are giving people very unrealistic expectations.

"£300 car" "Bit of bartering" "Oil and filter change" (with a very cheeky eye roll) "stuff 'em" "walk away" "hassle they are being paid to sort"

That either bullst or you just happened upon a once in a lifetime situation. Sorry, but you come across like quite an unpleasant gentleman.

Indeed. A £300 BIN car and he went and haggled. Sorry but £300 was the price. You don't Buy It Now to then give yourself an opportunity to haggle. The clue is in the name.

And at £300 - that's £150 of scrap and £150 of risk. Man up... smile

You wouldn't be permitted to use (or keep) the vehicle on a road maintained at public expense and, unless you intended to address the matter fairly swiftly, you'd need to SORN it.

You couldn't get tax from a post office.

The taxation class would need to be changed first, and that is handled by DVLA.

With regards the dealer sorting the tax; that was an option when we bought ours but he was upfront because it would have involved him making a trip to Bristol from Westbury and it was much easier for me to do. Therefore a swift conversation and in return for me doing the tax he did some cosmetic repairs to the car.

Hi I just thought I'd let you know that you can now alter taxation class from disabled to plg(normal) at the post office now, I've spoke to Dvla today and received the email attached much better then having to go to a Dvla local office they are all shut now anyway

Once the tax class has been changed it can then be taxed as normal in subsequent years. This means you can pay for it online, at the post office etc.

(early 2017)

Needed the full v5, not just the V5c. Went to post office. They taxed car and changed the class at same time.

Luckily I picked up on it before I left garage and he told me I'd need the full v5 to do it
.
