Pulled the trigger on a 2.5T S Max from Evans Halshaw - the experience has been far from adequate but the car is good enough to warrant putting up with quite atrocious sales patter.

They are offering me a 2 year EH warranty for cost-price (£399) but I usually send my cars to a trusted mechanic who gives me favorable labour rates.

I didn't get the warm, fuzzy feeling that EH would look after me once I paid over the readies so am unsure whether to save the £400 and self-insure for any issues that might crop up, or go for the warranty and hope for two years of "trouble free" motoring...

The S Max and Focus ST are pretty reliable cars so I am tempted to forget it...

Not worth the paper it's written on in my opinion. My father in law bought a car from them, then took out the extended warranty. A lot went wrong with the car and suprisingly none of it was covered under the extended warranty.

Just make sure you take a good read of everything that's included and excluded.

Save the money and don't bother. It isn't worth anything. Parents bought a car from TCW (if they had told me beforehand i'd have begged and pleaded not to), things went wrong but yet nothing was actually covered so ended up having to pay ourselves anway

Hmm, personally I would suggest with a place like EH is assume your buying privately, anything else is a bonus.

Yeah, my thinking really.

They have apparently done a full service on it, put a fresh MOT on and stamped the book. The salesman has continually reminded me how much they have spent prepping it!

I will receive a standard 3 month warranty anyway - question, if I were to take my new S Max to my trusted mechanic post-purchase and he was to find something sinister would I have any come-back under the warranty to get it rectified?

Why not ask EH if they'll agree to an independent inspection by your 'tame spanner monkey' before you pick up the car?

Cash has been transferred already - presumably can pull out of purchase if inspection was to discover major faults?

Not expecting anything as it drove tight, the service book was full, the engine bay was clean and the oil fresh and at good levels.

I think you're just being paranoid, if the car seemed ok, you paid good retail money for it, it has a good service history etc, it shouldn't be something to worry about.

I'm would tend to think the sale of goods act will protect you from any major bills in the near future... such as the engine blowing up in 2 weeks time or whatever. Anything else is bound to be considered fair wear and tear and excluded from the warranty (or any cheap warranty really).

I wasn't impressed with EH after they refused to honour their price guarantee on a car we bought for an elderly relative.

I would suggest that if your Evans Halshaw is anything like the one I used, they will be your best friend until the money is in their bank account and then suddenly they'll treat you like your Jimmy Saville in a primary school playground.

I wish my experience was the same, brand-new 2012 Focus ST with less than 750 miles on the clock had to be recovered from the side of the motorway last week after the engine shut down and wouldn't restart.

Very late to the party on this one after google search. I’m looking to purchase a 65 plate ford cmax from local EH Vauxhall dealer. Salesman trying to sell me the 2yr warranty (which wife fancies for the piece of mind, as the car will be used by her). This would be paid for though over 4 years with the hp on balance of the car. I reckon I can guess replies, but is this warranty worth having? Thanks

Are you adding the warranty to the purchase price and paying the lot over 4 years? If so, that will work out to one hell of an expensive warranty especially as you’ll be paying for 2 extra years after it’s expired.

There are 3rd party warranty providers out there who may be cheaper (and can pay monthly if need be) but always check what’s covered. You may also wish to read a certain M5 engine failure blog (google it - can’t name and shame) about how one of the biggest names in 3rd party warranties has behaved.

In short, any warranty not supplied by the original manufacturer is not a guarantee they’ll pay out when needed and you may well be better off putting the warranty money aside in a separate account and top that up monthly for any unexpected repairs.

Assume Ford do extended warranties so I personally would be approaching them not EH.

I bought an R8 from Evans Halshaw! Brave I know.

It had two knackered shocks and they paid out nearly £1k ! Result !

Although I only found that out after they had overfilled the car with oil and so I took it to Audi to get serviced immediately after buying it...

They also left a purple plastic Combe in the engine bay ....

Hi Everyone- was hoping for some advise.

About to put take the plunge on BMW 530d F10 model, with 60k in the clock from Evan’s Halshaw. I’ve been offered a two year extended warranty at the cost of £399. Is this worth taking up? Thanks

If it's that new and with that mileage, you're infinitely better off getting a BMW warranty.

A BMW extended warranty will be through an external provider, such as AWP Assistance U.K. Ltd.

Just a reminder in case it’s ever needed; your primary protection is already in legislation and deliberately designed to favour the customer:

I’ve used it on a number of occasions quite successfully.

I bought a R8 from EH

Got it serviced at Audi a week later and they advised the shocks were knackered

EH paid to have them replaced, nearly £800!

I was impressed
