I've had this feeling for a week or more that there is something in the back of my throat, a 'touching something' feeling when I swallow, and a vague sensation there is something there most of the time, like when you have a cold and get phlegm stuck back there.

The ships medic has had a good look with his metal 'throat searching device', whatever it is called, and says everything is normal.

I had the same thing a couple of months ago, but that was accompanied by lots of pain, and another guy I work with had the same thing.

There is no pain, no fever, no cold, or anything you'd normally associate with it.

Any ideas?

Sorry fella, I know it's not the lounge... But:

You work on a ship and have something phlegm like in your throat... Plenty of seaman jokes here smile

Joking aside, I get it occasionally but it feels slightly sore and I smoke and generally it's after a few days with not a lot of sleep so I put it down to a combination of those things!

Not a Quinsey is it?

A mate had it in Bangladesh. Not nice when the doctor sliced it open to drain it.

There's no pain or redness, so sounds unlikely.

None of the symptoms yet, no pain, redness, swelling etc. The medic can't see anything either.

What I've got feels like it is in the centre if anything like you get clogged up a bit when you have a cold. It has gone in the morning when I wake up, but seems to come back during the day. Today I have cut down to two cups of coffee, instead of my usual six or seven, and it is only 1pm now.

Can you get some menthol crystals from the medic for a cleanse? Tonsil stones just feel like something is stuck and a tugging uncomfortable rather than painful, and it could be behind the pillar of fauces but still feel like it's central.
Gargle with an oxygenating mouthwash like Peroxyl for those, make sure your mouth is really really clean and brush as far back of your tongue as poss

smile

Might be worthwhile getting a second opinion. Better safe than sorry.

You probably have tonsil stones like somebody above said. ( I believe its a build of of calcium and probably other things )

Open your mouth in the mirror and you probably will see white things sticking out right at the back of your mouth. Shove your finger into the side of your mouth near them ( You will probably choke a bit) if it is big enough you will push it out and spit it out. Don't smell it because you will probably be sick smile.

I coughed something up a while ago and thought it was a bit of food at the back of my throat, then i randomly came across a video of a girl removing a massive tonsil stone from her mouth, don't really remember how I came across it and why I watched it but thats when I realised its what I had coughed up. Had a few since, it looks like a piece of chewing gum when you get it out.

Just search "Tonsil Stone" on youtube and you will see, I saw you replied before about it but I have never had swelling, red or soreness because of it. You can just feel something at the back of your throat.

I'd get a second opinion, but there is only one medic on my ship. biggrin

Nope, never smoked, and rarely drink.

Later I will get in the bathroom with a flash-light and start poking around at the back of my throat I reckon. hurl

This is NOT me:

I was browsing TV last night and saw some medical program about a guy who was having throat problems. It went on for two years, he nearly died, then he had a CAT scan and they found a beer can ring pull in his trachea.....!!!

He thought he had swallowed one by accident a couple of years earlier, but it had actually gone down his wind pipe.
