Spotted: Porsche 928 GTS

Rare manual gearbox adds to the temptation with this late-model 928...

Porsche has proved very adept at adapting the brand to suit new fashions of late. The Cayenne seemed an awful idea a decade ago, yet the sporting SUV with a luxury twist is de rigueur in 2012. And who would bet against the production Sport Turismo bringing in a few more not already convinced by the Panamera?

Top end of 928 pricing but a desirable variant

But as we know, things weren't always so rosy. In the late 1960s, engineering progress with the 911 had reached an impasse, and sales were flagging. Step forward the 928, a Porsche GT without the compromises of its rear-engined counterpart. Amazingly, this strikingly modern design was revealed 35 years ago, and Porsche was planning to phase out the 911 on the 928's launch in 1978. However, the 'it isn't a real Porsche' mob wasn't having any of it (and you thought it began with the 996...), and the 928 remained a 911 relative rather than replacement until its 1995 demise.

This 928 is a very late GTS, with a 5.4-litre V8, 350hp and, of arguably greater significance, a manual gearbox. Only around 15 per cent of 928s have three pedals, the overwhelming majority of automatic sales commensurate with its more luxurious billing against the 911.

But to distance yourself from driving the 928 is to miss out. Passive rear-wheel steer through the 'Weissach Axle' aids turn in, whilst the weight distribution is 50:50. Moreover, whilst not a dainty sports car, the heaviest 928 has a quoted kerb weight of 1,620kg, or less than a E90 BMW M3. So you want a manual to take advantage of these dynamic attributes, especially as the auto is an old- school torque converter with four (or occasionally just three!) speeds.

The appeal stretches further than the manual 'box also. The current owner has driven it only at weekends meaning use has been sparing but frequent (10,000 miles in four years), and its first owner was Porsche GB.

Furthermore, all electrics (allegedly) work, and the car is cosmetically fine bar a couple of spots of corrosion. There's even a year's MOT, six months tax and a recent service, bolstering an already bulging history, to sweeten the deal.

Ah yes, the service history. Whilst a full folder is a great indicator of a cherished life, it can also highlight the true cost of running a car. For a 928, the cost is quite considerable, and the alluring £16,500 asking price must be looked through to bear maintenance in mind. This GTS has had £22,000 lavished on it in the past 15 years, with more than half of that since 2008.

But spending money on a classic is nothing new, and it's perhaps the modernity of the 928's design that makes it seem younger than its years.

Unfortunately, Porsche's relentless progress dates it also. In the 991 generation, the 911 now so ably masks its rear-engined traits that it can fulfil both the sports car and long-legged cruiser role, leaving no feasible gap for a new 928. Which only means one thing; get out and enjoy an original now! And if £16,500 is out of reach, how about an early 4.7 928 S for £4,995?

Always loved the 928, and especially the GTS.

This one seems like reasonable money, too...<loggs onto bank account> smile

My uncle has had a late model metallic blue one from new. Dreamy motor.

From what i've read the manual is pretty awful in these, auto is supposed to be the better choice. I've not driven a 928 so this isn't an informed view, am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly.

Looked at a couple of 928s before gettingthe 911 and the god awful auto box did put me off, as mentioned most seem to have 3 speeds working in them rather than 4. No idea what the manwell is like though. There was a very nicely sorted Yellow manual on ebay apparently owned by a racing driver who built it as a track toy, probably should have gone and had a look, it was a LOT cheaper than this!

I have driven a Manual 928S4 and thought it was fantastic, although it took a little getting used too. The pedal position felt a bit strange as the clutch pedal seems a long way from the other pedals. The gearbox is also a dogleg which will put off some but I'm used to that setup. Overall the car was fairly easy to drive (like a 944 but bigger) and with the big V8 fully wound up very quick.

I have a well looked after 928 S4, it is very much a GT with a raw edge.

It is used to commute to work in and is the car I choose for cross country jaunts.

IMHO it handles better that any 911 of the same era and will maintain a 150+ cruise with ease.

One of these used to rumble around Cambridge with a loud exhaust - sounded absolutely brutal.

I recall Top Gear magazine reviewing this with the Merc CL and 850CSi, it came out very well and has aged the best out of the three I think.

Seems like a great choice as a weekend car

Not driven a manual, but that's nothing wrong with the Auto. It's only got 4 speeds, but the spread of torque is so wide it doesn't really matter, particularly in the GTS.

The Auto is fine out of the box, but if you want to press on it does take a bit of getting used to, as it wont select first from a standstill unless you either hoof it massively or select 2nd on the shifter. Once you're used to it, it shifts quickly and is very 'obedient' to the shifter, it'll stay in the selected gear even at low revs and hit the rev limiter for example.

I loved these ever since my dad borrowed his bosses 928 S2 and took me to watch the cricket at the oval back in 1987. Gold with brown 'pasha' trim it looked amazing and sounded incredible - just magnificent. Can't remember much about the cricket only that we missed the entire first innings because we took the long way there.

Yet another car we all know will slowly appreciate in value and we will kick ourselves for not buying in 10 years time.
How many times have I told people that I 'nearly' bought a 1969 911 2.0 S in immaculate condition for £18k a few years ago.

So many cars, so little money. Dammit

I test drove a 1986 manual 4.7 car in 1994 and found it very heavy in its controls though it was certainly quick - but i had little hesitation going off to buy a Corvette C4 of similar vintage which I preferred for the noise, looks and undoubted cheaper running costs.

Having said that, the later 928s were much better looking and I would certainly have been tempted by this later model and always had an eye for a local black 928GT.
