Headlamp Motor Tip

My offside headlamp has always been a touch lethargic and creaky raising, and the other day it gave up the ghost half way up.

I have collected a few spare motors over the years, along with a couple of which don't work.

Once I had removed the motor, rather than just swap it for a working one I thought I would have a quick look to see what's actually wrong with it fully expecting the brushes to be worn out.

However I found they had plenty of life left in them and that the bottom bearing had seized. I couldn't dismantle it as the screw holding the manual raise knob was rusted solid so I just soaked the bottom of the motor in a couple of inches of oil. After a couple of hours it was all freed up and worked fine on re-assembly.

Whilst I was at it I thought I'd try soaking the bottom of the 2 faulty motors for a bit to see if they had the same problem. I didn't even bother dismantling them and now have another couple of working spares.

I imagine you could even soak the bottom of a motor without even removing it from the car which is a bit of a fiddle.

I'm now going to try it with my broken motor which I've already replaced but it would give me a spare.

Also, as I said in another thread, those motors are just ordinary humble Lucas Wiper motors with a different top and knob added to the other end.

Therefore it's also worth picking up a spare wiper motor or two for bits.... If you can find a 'lever' type instead of a cable, even the top casting is pretty much identical.

Expect they just soak em in oil and re-sell em as reconditioned !
