A few month back one of my rear calipers was sticking, my pal has a two poster ramp so we removed the disc's cleaned them up along with the calipers and checked the pads which all seemed to be fine. This solved the problem and the calliper now no longer sticks but I have just recently noticed a clunking noise when travelling at low speeds and it usually happens when am pulling away from junctions. It actually sounds more of a brief grinding clunk if you know what i mean and it sounds like its metal to metal. The only other thing I can think it could be was my friend adjusted the handbrake and I can now pull up more on the hand brake lever could the handbrake be sticking and this is what am hearing? Just thought I would ask the question before the car goes back on the ramp?

Sounds like the diff oil needs changing. It's not difficult or expensive. Have a word with MF, I'm sure they can advise thumbup

It does feel like a sticky brake when it clunks. If it only does it when hot then it's almost certainly the diff.

Yeah, sounds like the diff. Watch the dash when it happens, you might get a "low traction" warning too.

Mine does this after a drive on the motorway.

Glad this has cropped up as mine does it very occasionally when I'm in slow moving traffic in first gear and the low traction warning pops up. What does it mean and how do I fix it?

It means that your diff oil is shagged and you need to either change it completely or add some friction modifier. Speak to the fishy boys phone

Cheers Richie,
As long as my diff isn't shagged and I get away with an oil change I'll be happy!!! A certain person I know with a SC is having to replace his diff at the moment and I'm getting paranoid!!!

Yes, but his diff has spent a lot of time going sideways yikes

PS. A small amount of drivetrain shunt when you pull away is quite normal.

I did change out the diff oil a few month back with royal purple but I will try the modifier and see if this helps? It's a strange one because it only started when we cleaned up the rear calipers? I noticed when I pulled away from a petrol station yesterday that when it made this horrid noise the car slowed down like something was sticking? It did not feel good at all!!!

I have this on my car, i have changed all the oil etc and it still occurs. 007 also has the same problem (which i beleive fish have had everything out to check) Also a few other people get it sometimes. It appears to be one of the monaro traits!

I have herd people having problems with diff slap but i think with is something different, I will buy some modifier from monkfish and while its up on the ramp I will check over the handbrake I have a feeling its got something to do with that?

Probably because your brakes were dragging, masking the clunking??? Now you've cleared the brakes the axles are
nice and free to transmit the clunking diff.

I just changed my oil on the VT. the old royal purple stuf is messy. It looks and smells awfull. I replaces with redline oil and I have not added the modifier at all and I don't get one clunk. It locks up a bit better when warm and is more predictable but still spins one wheel at times. I hate these diffs........

But the redline is well priced and is a lot nicer spell and colour! Not that it matters!

I have heard of loads of guys changing the oil, adding friction modifier etc. only to find that it still happens every now and again. So i think a certain amount is normal.
I use the car everyday on the motorway and hear the clunk usually at least once each trip after being on the motorway.

It's still slipping because it has no friction modifier.

Friction modifier makes the oil LESS slippy.

(Not wanting to teach granny how to suck eggs, so sorry in advance if you knew this)

This is the thing it's just started doing it and it happens a lot! I was out in the car for about 20 minutes yesterday and it clunked about a half dozen times? I could understand if it done it occasionally but it's weird it just started after I reburbished the rear brakes? It was running perfectly fine before apart from that one caliper which rubbed occaionally. Best thing to do is get it back on the ramp and check over everything am just glad it's not my daily driver or I would have been a bit more worried! Will keep yous posted

If it's the diff it will only do it when hot (usually)
