The GBox Detent Use.
Discussion
Hey there Everyone,
I got a email from a customer of ours today that I found to be rather interesting. I wanted to share the gist of it here and address a couple of things that I thought that everyone might benefit from knowing.
Here is the body of the email that he picked up from a post here.
"Just a note on that detent... it makes the gear selector over throw the gear into all gears not just 2nd gear. This is not the correct way to modify these gearboxes as now you have 5 other gears that are not at their correct engagement point. They are being overthrown onto the dog-ring and this can damage the teeth and sliding sleeve as it crashes down onto the gear! We have seen similar things and found 3rd/4th dog teeth rings with pieces broken off. If you want it done correctly you need to modify the gearbox internally".
This is not correct. While the detent that we supply does in fact allow for all of the gears to engage deeper, it does not result in a overthrow of the operating sleeve to the dog ring, and to date has NEVER resulted in additional damage being created as a result of its use. In no way will this result in damage to the gears, the dog rings, nor the operating sleeve.
Under the fact or crap microscope, this one measures CRAP.
There are a couple of different ways to resolve this issue, and one of them is to go inside the internals and replace the part that this detent actually engages. This can not be done by the Do It Yourselfer, and as a result is far more costly than our detent is. It requires that gearbox to be completely removed from the car and disassembled.
So you can effect this change by either spending $179.00 USD plus shipping to the UK, and spend 1-2 hours installing this yourself, have your trusted shop do the work for, OR pay quite a bit more to have the internals reworked, which will usually also result in a rebuild at the same time, which is likely to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000 to $4000 USD instead.
I am always happy to help answer any questions that anyone here might have about this part or any other part that supply. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Warmest Regards,

Hi,
Just checked your profile and found the old thread and it is in fact a post of mine, thought it sounded like me!
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
There for everyone to see. I have actually spoken with you on the telephone a few times and you have never come up with the goods I have asked for.... As the thread says why see me as a threat as it is obvious you do as the thread was over 2 years ago?

Hey there Mike,
I am sorry, I don't recall talking to you in the past, but what information were you looking for on this? I would be happy to address any concerns or questions you might have.

Eric,
First off, we rebuild a massive portion of street and track gearboxes not just in UK but from all over and have got one of the best reputations in this business. I called up years ago to ask about the 2nd gear and sliding hubs along with synchronizer ring sets for Cayman/boxster S gearboxes. All excuses not to sell them to me and in fact at one stage denying you even sold them, until directed to your webpage!
I have rebuilt a number of transmissions that have "unusual" breakages and wear, which can be put down to this detent you sell. As said before the correct and safe way of rectifying this has to be done internally.
You can keep selling the half way house repair option and I will keep dealing with real customers who actually want the root cause rectified and sorted for good.
