Time For Tea? Imprezas on the attack

Bring a bit of warble back to your life with a noisy soundtrack to your afternoon brew

I'll hold my hands up; rally Imprezas are my Monte Mini, my Mk2 Escort, my Group B car. Anyone who's watched rallying will have an era and car that defines the sport for them and for me it's blue Subarus on gold wheels, the poignancy of association with two dearly departed heroes of the sport just adding to it further.

Imported two-door Impreza tempts...
Imported two-door Impreza tempts...
Much as I love circuit racing too there's something about watching rally cars that has me absolutely transfixed. I could watch hours of it but for this Scooby-based indulgence we're asking just five minutes of your time. The perfect accompaniment to your afternoon brew and biscuit. Suffice to say, there's plenty more out there if you want it!

Watching - and hearing - this vid also gets me a bit misty-eyed for my old Scooby wagon, a 1995 WRX with compulsory noisy exhaust (natch). As noted in our PH Heroes piece on the P1, there's no doubting the golden age of the fast Impreza has probably passed us by but there are still a few keeping it real and still a few tempting propositions in the PH classifieds. I couldn't find a 22B, but I did find this.

Saying that, I wonder whatever became of my old wagon...

I never had a "classic" model, but went in my mate's last-of-the-breed X-reg in Mica Blue wagon. I loved it. It felt so stable, the rush of the turbos, reliable too.

I liked it so much that i bought a bug-eye WRX wagon in Mica Blue. Kept it for 2 years and 30k miles. Cracking motor, but not to the wife's tastes. She got rid of her C1 when the baby arrived, and i agreed to p/x the scoob against something we both liked.

So now i have a Leon 2.0 TDI.

When we move house next year we're having a car each. An old-school scoob is definitely on my shopping list, preferably something with decent shove, so an STI. Looking forward to it!

That ad has a bit of a cheek listing that STi version 3 as a P1.

The P1 was based on the STi V3, but that doesn't make the car in the ad a P1.

The whole appeal of a scooby over an evo is that flat 4 rumble... so why do the later ones not have it??

When do Subarus not sound like Subarus? Am I missing something here?

Sainz's car in the video you posted sounded a bit lumpier with more spluttering, but I think that is probably more to do with the incredibly aggressive antilag setup he used.

Curious but why an RB5, they are just a Turbo 2000 with some clever marketing aren't they.
