Update: Jag's M5 beater

Full XFR-S details confirm 550hp from supercharged V8. Oh and there's a choice of spoiler

Update: We've now got hold of the official infomation about Jaguar's mighty new XFR-S. As we reported yesterday, it’ll be powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 producing 550hp. Torque is 501lb ft and Jaguar says the R-S is good for 60mph in just 4.4 seconds. Top speed will be an electronically limited 186mph.

Jag also offer a smaller one. Phew

Anyone not liking that rear spoiler (and there were a few) will be relieved to know Jaguar will be offering an alternative. All we know about the second one is that it's smaller than the one seen in the pictures, but doesn't get the carbon fibre elements. Jaguar says all the bodywork changes reduce lift by 68 percent, so it's not just cosmetic.

The gearbox is the eight-speed auto from the upcoming F-Type, which will include ‘Quickshift’ functionality allowing faster gear changes through ‘rapid and precisely timed engine torque intervention’. It'll also give an automatic throttle blip on downshifts, and it can recognise when you're mid-bend and hold the gear until you’re out.

You've got active dampers that can also be set according to the dynamic mode chosen. It also comes with Jaguar's clever active limited slip diff (very similar to the one on the BMW M5), and overall lateral stiffness has been increased by about 30 percent.

Other suspension changes include revised knuckles based on those seen in the XKR-S and a new rear subframe. These are combined with a steering system that uses the valving developed for the F-Type.

One reason BMW might not be quaking just yet is the price. The XFR-S will cost £79,995 when it goes on sale May next year. That's seven grand more than the M5.

What we wrote yesterday: When Jaguar last week revealed a glimpse of that massive spoiler on its new XFR-S, we got more than a fair idea that the new model would mean business.

Now that full shots of the car have been leaked in advance of the car's official reveal at the Los Angeles motor show this evening, we know it.

Arguably, the biggest talking point will be the sizeable rear spoiler that'd look more at home on a mid-'90s Subaru than a supercharged Jaguar. The de-rigeur rear diffuser and quad-exit exhausts complete the back end.

Up front, things are marginally less shouty, but there's still a deep front bumper which incorporates three large, meshed air dams, in addition to the standard XFR's twin bonnet vents.

There'll be heavy use of carbon fibre throughout, too, replacing most of the standard car's chrome trim. Six-spoke alloy wheels with polished faces will complete the picture.

looks spuerb, but why the spoiler, why?!?!!

nice subtle lip would have finished it off perfectly.

otherwise spoilt a perfectly great looking car

edit: yes the wheels look like Wolfrace dervitives, theyd have to go aswell

Looks nice. But then again, it could be a new Mondeo ST.

OMG!..where to start?
So you start with a divisive design...which causes much debate, give it anip and tuck to align it with the concept and everything settles down and is appreciated...

What...everything too quiet at the Jag design studio? I know lets nick Volvo's Polestar Blue (or Porsche's...whatever) and crash the bugger into Halfords! yey!

Awful wheels, awful body adenda.

This should have looked just like the XF-R but with different badges IMO.

I really, really like what Jaguar have done recently and I'm sure this will be great too. However, that rear wing... hurl

Way too bling for my liking and in this guise unlikely to be competing with the attentions of an M5 buyer. Ditch the spoiler, wheels and paint job then maybe it would be!

I'll assume they hired the same designer that penned the Lancer Evo X

Very nice. 8/10 from me. Would be 9.75 is they offered a manual gearbox. smile
8/10 from me, then I read this.

So it should actually be 7/10.

Clearly that wing is going to be the major Marmite factor of the car.

i dont like the colour

wing is a bit HELLOoooooo

i have not got a XF to replace my 'S' type as in my eyes it does look like a mondeao, nothing against either but I dont want to drive a car that I think looks like something else

but if this can take on a M5 well its going to be a good car
