So, I'm a single 25 year old bloke, who has travelled to all sorts of countries (around 50 or so) however one place I have never been is Scotland (highlands) I've seen pictures and it looks really nice.

Can anyone recommend a route or areas that should be on a PHers radar?

The trip will be done alone, over 3-4 days.

Go in summer. At this time of year it's only light for a couple of hours a day, and that's no fun. I reckon it makes sense to go up one side and back down the other - I think north on the east coast (the road is really good) and then wind your way back down through the west.

Most people seem to comment about Midgeys in the summer although I can't say I've experienced any issues. My OH is Scottish from Oban in Argyle originally. When we go up there I prefer the route that follows the loch side (loch Lomond) and the drive up Glencoe is also a must. The scenery just seems to get even better the further north you travel. April and May tend to be a safer bet in my experience but you never can tell.

The West Coast is stunning.

If you are coming up the to the East Coast, Perth to Aberdeen via Glenshee (A93) is one of my favourite roads

If you are heading to the Highlands, then consider Perth as a starting point from there head north on the (previously mentioned) A93 to Braemar. Then you need to take the A939 to Nairn.
If you want to head further north then it would depend on how far north you want to go. John O'Groats? then just follow the A9 all the way, then A99 to Wick and on to JoG.

You could then just follow the road round the north coast (A836) to Tongue, then the A838/A894 round to Ullapool on the west coast. Then follow the west coast south taking in Applecross/Skye etc as you wish, till Fort William, then head inland to Loch Lomond via Glencoe.

There are to some extents not too many options if you want to do a full circuit, but so many different options if you don't, IYSWIM.

Best time of year is usually about mid-end of May. Long daylight, light traffic, not many midgies.

The A697 can be better than the A68 to Edinburgh, A68 is usually busier.

A939 at Nairn, you can turn off before Nairn and take the B9090 and B9006 through Cawdor and Culloden to Inverness, misses the often busy and slow A96.

And between Shieldaig and Lochcarron you should really take the coats road round to Applecross andback over the 'pass'.

As for where to go after Lochcarron then I suppose it depends on how much time you have.
You could just head south A87-A82 to Fort William. You could go over to Skye on the bridge and come back to the mainland at Mallaig on the ferry.
Or you could go further north before heading west.
Either from Dingwall and up to Bonar Bridge, then west to Ullapool, or from Garve, head to Ullapool and then round the coast via Gairloch etc.

There's a good thread running in GG under "Roads" which gives some great ideas for travelling in the Highlands.

I'm doing something similar in May, but the other way round.

Glen Coe - Plockton - Ullapool via Applecross - Day drive to Scourie - Cromarty - Stonehaven - Home via some where in Northumberland.

1500 miles in total. Looking forward to it.
