Hello Snappers,

Looking at a D7000 for a present, but then I noticed that the D5200 is coming out this week. Now I have looked both and specifications are long and I don't know if there is any major difference. Prices seems the same. They both looks good to me. Any thoughts?

Will be for a keen amateur, still and some video.

Cheeers,

Im in a similar position in that i have a similar amount of money to spend, the D7000 is the better quality camera. The D5200 is a great camera in its own right, but the D7000 is a step up in quality.

For what i want the D7000 is definitely the better camera, the magnesium body, weather proofing, low light ISO performance, twin card slot, 100% view finder and good fps make it a no brainer.

In comparison the D5200 is made of plastic, it isnt weather proof, it had a single card slot and its doesnt have a 100% view finder.

This isnt terribly detailed but it gives you an idea of the differences between the two...

I'd also consider the canon 60D which can be had for similar money, it's on par with the D7000.

That's some good info. The present receiver all ready has some Nikon lens, so it has to be a Nikon.

I think I will stick with the D7000 choice as a present, but I will wait for a full DPREVIEW.

If they are older model Nikon lenses (AF rather than AF-S) then the 5200 won't autofocus with them as it doesn't have an AF drive motor in the body. So that might make the decision easier, it certainly would for me.

I think you know what I mean.

Good point about the motor drive, I don't know old the lens are. Think I'll probably go with the D7000.

Definitely the 7000. Being the new kid on the block the D5200 is over-priced at the moment IMHO, especially when compared to the D5100 which is only marginally inferior but half the price. If for whatever reason you swing back towards the D5200, I'd therefore suggest considering the 5100 instead and spend the £400 saving on a nice lens or two.
