Hi, just wanted to see if there were any readers on here that would be fit to help me. I passed my Class 1 test 18 months
ago but cannot seem to find anyone that takes on newly passed drivers. Most firms need two years experience, but how do you get experience if no one gives you a chance.I have had my Class II for over ten years with a lot of experience but Class II work is very hard to come by. My work has always been in the construction industry but have had to give it up due to an injury so was looking to get into wagon driving full time.Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Networking and agency work.

Offer your services to old fleet in offshoot sectors like agriculture then embellish your CV I.e. a few weeks temping now and a few more in eighteen months time and you can have 'two years experience'. Chances are someone will take you on full time in between if you prove honest, reliable and hardworking.

This is from anecedotal experience of two friends who were in similar circumstances.

Good luck.

There is no way. You just have to keep door knocking and have your ear to the ground. This is what the adverts claiming £1000 per week for LGV driving and the LGV trainers conveniently forget to tell you. You pay your £3k for your licences and then can't do st with them because every company that doesn't run bent wants a minimum of 2 years experience to satisfy their insurance co. By the way, not wanting to pour water on your fire but if you can't find any work now then you've less than zero chance after Christmas. The industry is on its arse with far too many drivers and trucks already for the amount of haulage there is to move. Hauliers are shedding drivers, not taking them on.

Try nationwidedrivers.com

They have strategic agreements with some of the countries biggest hauliers where they will accept freshly passed drivers subject to a driving assessment....

All that jazz has summed it up, however i am of the opinion that its "not what you know, its who you know" and getting into the industry may be easier if you know someone already doing it,

Its how i started off 12 years ago on a Transit and progressed up to Class 1 work a couple of years later, currently on extended leave as a full time dad overseas as my partner has been transferred, and i don't miss the job at all.

Good luck OP I'm sure there will be some one willing to give you a chance, what experience do you have with regards to flat work? This type of work although relatively few and far between on C2 can, in my experience work in your favour, it means you have the knowledge on how to secure a load, and not just slide a curtain shut or slam some back doors

Before doing any of the LGV categories did you do extensive research into the jobs market especially for those with a new category?

No didnt do any research at all as i only done my test so i would have something to fall back on if things didnt work out in my current job which was mainly heavy construction work, but since ive injured my shoulder ive had to think of changing career.

Where do you live?

What big distribution firms are close by?

What smaller companies are close?

Pack your bag, go knocking, and be ready to go!

I've just Google Map'd around Stafford..

I've found some big industrial estates.. Mustang Drive.

There's Culina, a big Wincanton run site i cant make out and a fair few other big distribution centres.

I know there's a Sainsbury's in Stone and Stoke.

All decent blue-chip companies.

Get out there, go to receptions/gatehouses.. Find out who's in charge of recruitment. Be pro-active.

I did and landed a great job within a month of passing class 1.

Good luck.

There are quite a few places that will take you up with that experience, unfortunately we dont have any depots near Stafford so I cant help but just knocking on doors and phoning up will land you a job if you keep at it. Ask as many drivers as you can too, we always know who will be likely candidates for work wink

Thats fair enough if it was only as a secondary option

There are plenty who dive in, get the licences and then wonder why they cannot get a job !!
