S Type Gearbox - Advice
Discussion
Apologies if this has been done before but I'm on the ask, courtesy of my father who bought a cheap SType, 3000cc V6 auto as a "snotter" on the whim that it'd last 18months.
Well it didn't...... The gearbox fault that is "just a warning light mate" has happened and has now blocked off top-gear. So it's essentially a 4speed.
He will be fixing it, and labour is sorted, BUT the question is are we best:
i) Sourcing a replacement box off of eBay or such, for circa £250.00
OR
ii) Getting our tame mechanic person to investigate and see if this one is fixable?
When it was fault code scanned, Jag said it was a "solenoid" somewhere.
ALSO: Torque converter. If swapping box, do we use the torque converter from his car, or buy another with the new box?
Thanks in advance.

North Lincolnshire.
Code scanned previous was Gearbox Solenoid fault
How far up in North Lincolnshire because Jagutech in Hessle on the North bank of Humber Bridge are all ex jaguar lads who have the correct diagnostics equipment, service most of the North bank Jaguars that are out of the Jag dealership warrantyCode scanned previous was Gearbox Solenoid fault

Scunny.IIRC Jagutech are the mob who had it for a few years as it was sourced from Thorne way on by us, BUT came from Lexus in Hull as a PX

I've asked father (who's at work) and the code is written down at home. He'll check 2nd and 5th again later on his way home, and text me the code.
So I'll upload tonight/tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
Matt
One thing a lot of people don't realise about the S-Type is that it doesn't use 2nd gear on light accelerations. It does 1-3-4-5. This isn't really noticeable in normal driving. If you accelerate hard - i.e. towards the red line in first, if the change occurred at 6000 rpm in first the revs should drop to about 4500 rpm on a very early car (Jan 1999 to Oct 1999) and about 4250 rpm on a 5 speeder built after that. If the revs drop far lower than that then 2nd gear has effectively been blocked out by the transmission management software tryng to protect the transission. So I'll upload tonight/tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.

Update from my father:
Fault code P1788 which when you check up says open circuit on Pressure Control solenoid B which is 2 of the 7 solenoids
2 nd gear appears to be engaging
After a rough change on way home tonight the engine management light went off Normally a 5 speed auto box I need to go on open road where I can do 70 mph and see if anything has changed
Have been on www.obd-codes.com/ trouble - codes which said valve body Also www.fixya.com/ cars

If it's an open circuit on 2 of the solenoids then in my humble opinion it is unlikely to be the transmission, and far more likely to be the loom. Check with a genuine expert like RedVictor who owns his own transmission rebuild business.
I would look at removing the gearbox loom and pinning out the loom, while measuring resistance and checking for corrosion. This should be easy to do.
If it is the solenoid then this is also easily replaced. It's just a question of removing the oil pan & swapping out the solenoid module - which is separate from the valve body.
The hardest part of that job is setting the oil level.
I would change the transmission only if you can't get the above to work - and get it done by somebody who will guarantee the work.
See the following link, the part I am talking about is 705, and is exactly the same for the V6 & V8 S-Type and Lincoln LS models.
