2000 Boxster S broke down today
Discussion
Good evening everyone,
Had quite an eventful day today. Drove my friend up to Birmingham from Bristol to buy an 04 Boxster. All was going fin until on the way home on the motorway at a constant speed of 65mph as it was extremely wet, the car spluttered and seem to lose all power and the Check Emissions light started to flash. The car stopped on the first lane of the M42 as it didn't have enough power to go any further. It cut out and i tried to restart the car which it was having none of. The engine kept turning a second time and then fired up to 2000 revs and then cut out again. Had to get towed off the motorway by the highways agency and waited for the aa. Fault reader plugged in and two faults came up - misfire cylinder 1 and cylinder 3. The mechanic thought it maybe a faulty coil pack so he reset the codes, started the engine and it sounded extremely rough so it was switched straight back off. The car has now been recovered to Porsche Bristol where it will be diagnosed. The car has done 70000 miles and had all the coil-packs changed two years ago about 15,000 miles ago. It was parked up after this happened for about 5 hours and dropped no oil as far as I could see.
Just wondering if any one has ideas of what could be wrong as i am completely stressed out thinking that this could be pretty disastrous!
Cheers

Just had an answer phone message to say that they have found bits of metal in the oil filter and that the next stage will be to strip down the engine if I want to go that far. I will sit on it over the weekend and then decide what i want to do, whether I fix the car and keep it, sell it as it is, or break it for parts

Bad news for Xmas hey. Best of luck with whatever you decide. Porkupine said:

Blimey. I'm right in the middle of hunting for a boxster of this sort of age/mileage (though maybe a bit lower, so 60k) and this scares the willies out of me.... How on earth can any car manufacturer these days make an engine that could fail terminally at 70k - let alone one with the quality reputation of Porsche?? (Accepted that we don't yet know what happened here, but its a possibility). And how do I minimise the risk of this happening when buying? Will a PPI really help?
Oh and comiserations to the OP.

Thanks everyone. I really can't describe how gutted I am after spending a small fortune on the car already this year. In two months it's had new radiators, full coolant change, back bumper repainted, new inner and outer track rods and rear boot struts.
It's my pride and joy and is far too good to scrap but then there is no way I can afford to have the engine rebuilt. The hardest part for me to take is that I didn't ever imagine sellIng it and I just can't imagine it getting scrapped and rotting away. I spend the majority of my free time cleaning it and driving it. I will be phoning Hartech at some point to discuss my options and think about my next steps over christmas.
Even though I was well aware of the issues around the engine before I bought the car it wouldn't put me off buying another although I would definitely proceed with extreme caution although it seems to be a completely random event

Sorry to hear your misfortune.
My 993 suffered engine failure about a year ago , so I decided to sell it as it was and let the new owner deal with
the problem.
I then looked at Boxsters but in the end I bought a MX5.
Cheap, bullet proof, great fun and may I say I,m enjoying my little Mazda as much if not better than all the Porsche models I've owned.
No more unreliable and overrated expensive Porsche for me.
Steady
