Anyone had any problems with their Thule bike carriers and exhaust location on their cars.

I'm mounting a G6 929 rack to a removable hitch on a Range Rover Sport (with the straight pipes rather than the downward pointers ). Shouldn't be a problem, buy wanted to pick brains rather than trash a rim and tyre by cooking them.

The ML diesel fumes make a mess of the carrier and one of our bike wheels. The Scooby is fine though (petrol).

Never considered heat to he a problem but the diesel fumes have forced me to consider whether I could make a pair of diverter pipes to push the files outwards or downwards.

Anyone experienced hitch mounting a bike rack on a car with straight exit exhausts?

Never seen an exhaust problem, seen lots fall off, illegally block lights and number plate and get wiped off by the driver against other traffic because they stick out the sides/back.
Man up and get a roof rack!

It'd have to be a pretty long bike to stick out wider than a range rover. And is it macho or something these days to have a roof rack? Maybe it says 'hey - I can waste fuel so I must have "manned up"!' ;-)

I mount up to 3 bikes on the back of a C6 Corvette on a Thule rack. The 4 exhausts exit straight out the back and the hitch comes out in the middle of the 2 pairs of pipes, so I don't think you'll find anything closer than that.

I've never had any problems whatsoever with the heat causing any damage to the rack or the bikes. And having these on the back of the car has only ever lost me about 7% in fuel economy. Plus (when using the rack on my other cars) I don't need to enter certain car parks at ferry ports etc via the Bus lane to allow for any extra height.

You can see the towbar in this pic:

And this is with the bike rack:
