Hi some help please if you can:

I have an old (1976) Honda civic that was originally sold and used in the UK. A previous owner took it and 'imported' it to Isle of Man. (BTW that gave it it's own isle of man registration plates - no longer on the original ones). I have since brought it back (to england).

Now it is registered as being in Isle of Man ie not officially over 'here'. On looking at re-importing & registering it properly here, I do not appear to need to have an IVA test (cost £208.35+VAT!)done (which I though I did) at a vosa place as:

You don’t need vehicle approval for:

cars and light goods vehicles over 10 years old
from here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/when-you-need-...

in which case, what do I do? I currently have it insured in my name with my address here, but obviously it has no MOT or road tax. If I drive it, is my insurance valid? I would like to import it correctly as I wish to sell it, but don't want to get done inadvertantly.

Can I simply 'register' it? There is no longer a UK V5C form (it has a isle of man type certificate)

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration

here's the section relating to 'old' vehicles. Mine was uk registered and taxed after 1983 (I think up to approx 1998 or so)

edit:

it says here if importing a vehicle over 10 years old I should contact the dvla, so I guess I'e got to just call them:

Here's the car btw:

bloody hell rang dvla - they were extremely helpful! I need

  1. MOT (ask them to record it under the vin number)
  2. insurance under the vin number
  3. form V55/5 filled in (can fill it in at local dvla office or they can post to you)
  4. money for roadtax (£135)
  5. two forms of ID
and jobs a good-un. Especially if you have other documntation ie the old paperwork which I do. 9 times out of 10 he said it will get back the original registration number.

So, job number 1: I need an MOT!

Yup, dead easy, I "imported" a car back to the UK from IoM a couple of years ago. Now your car's here, as long as you have insurance and a pre-booked MOT you'll be fine.

My car even got it's old UK plate back.

We bring back 3-4 cars a month from the Iom, is really easy to do. Sometimes they give you a new tax disc on the day at DVLA other days they post it out, think it depends what mood the person is in tbh! Good looking car and think that picture is outside Peel church

Sounds the same as importing a LHD US car over 10 years old - if it passes an MOT then that's all you need to worry about really, just fill in the registration form.
